Because they're the critical apex of the franchise and for most of the 2010s Activision would basically say "sales are down because it isn't a Black Ops year" simply because the power gap between Black Ops and stuff like Ghosts, IW, AW, etc. was enormous.

Closest Battlefield ever got to being a threat was one of Battlefield's best entries vs one of COD's weakest entries and Infinite Warfare still outsold it without breaking a sweat.
If there's anything that actually poses a threat to COD, it's Borderlands which has consistently sold better than Battlefield, Fortnite and Roblox. If COD was nervous about anything it was probably GTA6 being slated for autumn 2025 until it wasn't, which is probably why they decided to go with a Black Ops sequel in the first place.

An okay spy thriller that tries a little too hard to up the stakes on the Bell twist of Cold War but also consciously avoids it. It also does the open world shit a lot better than MWIII's half-assed "lmao dump their ass in the Warzone map." Black ops 4 zombies also consolidates the entire call of duty franchise into a single universe by destroying the multiverse and sending all parallel universes into the dark aether, this left a single timeline where every CoD is now canonically taking place which is why the modern warfare reboots references black ops and has black ops characters. The zombies mode is also canonically happening in the campaign story, the events of cold war zombies are mentioned in modern warfare 3 reboot. Infinite warfare is yet to be made canon because of how far in the future it is.

I would consider buying them

Played through a lot of the recent COD campaigns recently since they were free and I had time.

The story has never been interesting in these games but theyre particularly bad in the newer games. So yes the story and characters are ass in all of them.
Putting that to the side,
1. As flawed as the series is, its still better than pretty much every other military shooter. I recently also played games in the series of Ghost Recon, The Division, Far Cry, Medal of Honor, etc and theyre just too flawed.
2. Modern Warfare, both old and new, is the best of the franchise and is way better than Black Ops. Playing BLOPS 6 was kind of torture and stupid. But then MW2 and MW3 were much better. Well, ignoring *those* missions in MW3 anyway.
3. Whoever thought armored sponge enemies was a good idea should be fired and blacklisted from the game industry forever. It does not need to take 10 sniper shots or 3 full mags dumped into someones head to kill them, thats just fucking stupid

In fact, this sort of thing is my shittest for shooters; if a headshot with a single bullet doesnt kill, its probably shit
