the remaster is dogshit in many ways but I think the butchering of the artstyle is something that only people born before the 2000s will understand

Never thought the day would come where I'd defend Oblivion's art design.

oh i wanted to ask since i have not played the remaster, is Night Eye a thing again? because in the original game, it got, like actually dark at night, unlike fucking skyrim.

I have a 4060ti and it runs well enough with ultimate engine tweaks. It's just bad.

Bad gamefeel and ugly graphics.
So basically the same complaints as vanilla Oblivion but worse because 2025 gaming is worse.

The biggest changes I can actually say I liked after having played Oblivion back then and the remake that just appeared in my account (so I paid nil for it) is that how skills level up was changed so skills level faster related to the action taken. IE more costly spells level the relevant skill faster as opposed to the previous system of X amount of spells cast in total. Same for level ups now giving a guaranteed 12 points so no more meta gaming what skills to level and when so that you get the full 5 stat points per stat you want to level up. Same for retro-active hp/stamina/magicka gains.

Graphically it's impressive they made the game kind of uglier on purpose attempting to make a high-poly version of textures that weren't exactly good back then either.

I kind of prefer the visuals of the original. I understand the remaster is technically better but it just doesn't look as inviting or adventurous.

DOes that make any sense? Something about the top one, not the technical level of the visuals, but the color choices and atmosphere of it, is inspiring. I want to go on an adventure when looking at the top one. I'm filled with wide eyed wonder, I want to be a hero, I want to save the princess and kill a dragon.

I can't explain it, and I need to be clear. I'm not the biggest fan of Oblivion. I like Morrowind better, I like Skyrim better. Oblivion in terms of gameplay always felt like it didn't know what it wanted to be. Like or hate morrowind or skyrim I always felt like those two games had a better grasp of what sort of games they wanted to be.

So when I say the original Oblivion fills me with the urge to go adventuring, I don't say it out of a place of "I love this game" nostalgia.

It's just what I legitimately feel when looking at the visuals.

I don't understand why they do this especially for games where it's clearly male and female anyway, and the game refers to the two genders in all other places anyway.

Well they're trying to make it less clear by making both bodies more androgynous as time goes on. Veilguard was probably the most egregious with this. You had vaguely effeminate men and oddly masculine women.
