>Can the Playstation Portal play Playstation 5 games without owning a Playstation 5?
Yes — you can play some PS5 games on the PlayStation Portal without owning a PS5, but with important caveats:
>What You Can Do Without a PS5
• Thanks to a software update (beta), PlayStation Portal now allows cloud streaming of select PS5 games from Sony’s servers, meaning you don’t need a PS5 console to play them
• This feature is available to PlayStation Plus Premium subscribers, through the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog
• The current beta offers access to over 120 PS5 titles (some sources mention 200+) that you can stream at up to 1080p/60fps with full DualSense features like haptics and adaptive triggers
• From Reddit user experience:
“You won’t need a PS5 for the Portal at all.”
Reddit
“You just need a Portal, PS+Premium, and the PSapp on your phone. I don’t have a PS5 and that’s how I play.”
>What You Can't Do Without a PS5
• If you're looking to stream your own purchased or downloaded PS5 games, or games installed on a console, that still requires a PS5 for Remote Play
• Cloud streaming is limited to a curated list of titles within the PS Plus Game Catalog — standalone downloads or newer titles not included in the catalog won’t be accessible
>Final Note
So, yes, you can use PlayStation Portal without owning a PS5 — but only for the specific cloud-streamed games included in the PS Plus Premium catalog. If you want access to your full PS5 library or games not part of that catalog, you’ll still need a PS5.

Well, color me surprised, and that software update was recent, November20 2024 to be specific. So now it begs the question is a Playstation Portal would be considered a PS5 console even if it can't play all PS5 games and can only play them through cloud service. It's a similar scenario with the PSTV not being able to play all PSVita games.
