Some people believe shit graphics are part of the experience. They'll even go through the lengths of buying shit hardware like CRT TVs and controllers with outdated layouts/ergonomics. If they don't have a CRT TV they'll literally apply filters that simulate its artifacts. I wish I was joking.

sometimes upscaling can introduce errors but it's rare

It was meant to be seen at a certain distance.
It doesn't look good if you play it up close.
If you play it at the intended viewing distance, you don't need high resolution since the screen is too far to tell.

If a game has prerendered backgrounds upscaling looks terrible but otherwise not really.

Yes games like Resident Evil look like shit when you combine low resolution 2D backgrounds with high resolution 3D models.
