It's always been a license and always be a license. Just cause you don't have a physical object to give someone to give them your license doesn't mean it wasn't a license then.

Justify stealing however you want, it doesn't hurt the guy at the top, but the programmer at the bottom. The situation is stupid, sure, and pirate your games if you want to make sure they can't revoke your license, but don't say it's not stealing or it wasn't a license before. (And yes, selling discs was technically breaking the license agreement and is stupid, but that's how it works).

I own a copy of the software, not the IP or the code. Where I live if I buy a copy of the game I am legally the owner of that perpetual license. There is no “service” since I purchased a copy which has no stated end of service. Taking away my ability to play the game I bought is theft. This does not apply to gacha or MMOs that require a subscription since there’s the expectation that you must pay a subscription to keep playing an MMO.
