Which tenchu game is the most definitive one to play? I haven't played them.
I'm 32, I don't have time to play whole series unless I already really like them, or they're pivotal to gaming like MGS/DMC.

Release order.

If you just pick some arbitrary one you're not going to have a clue what makes it good unless you've played the previous ones.
And then you'll be back here next week saying "i don't get it" or "this shit is overrated".

That's like saying if I played nu-hitman I'm gonna get bummed at the best tenchu game because it's "worse" mechanically. doubt.
Also goes for any genre. fps, action. you view them in context of release year and console.

I loved this back in the day but when I tried it several years ago on a whim it was janky as fuck and dropped it after the first level or two. And I can still go back and enjoy old games no problem.

That being said, the enemy voice lines are hilarious and they still play in my mind randomly to this day.

Tenchu Z is my favorite. It's the only one with good gameplay imo. Best OST too.

Is it possible to emulate all the tenchu games?

yes but you need a wiimote bar for the wii version

thanks, I remember reading something about tenchu 2 rendering being broken or something

I re-played the first two games recently and I can't recommend them, they're just too hard to play. I recommend listening to the first game's soundtrack though, it's amazing.

Wrath of Heaven.
Tenchu Z was my favorite, though. Customize your own ninja, heaps of awesome abilities. Even had 4 player co-op.

Tenchu Z (Senran in Asia) is the best. It has all the cool Tenchu things but it doesn't feel like clunky ancient shit to play.
There's a PS2 title called Tenchu Kurenai that is cool as fuck as well. I don't know if this one got a Western release and don't know its English name (all my PS2 games were Japanese)

Tenchu 1 have really good BGM. Same composer with Kenshin anime I think
2 good it not for the fact they cut out a lot of BGM

Noriyaki Asakura only composed the opening song for Tenchu 2. The only entries with entire soundtracks written by him are Tenchu 1/3/4. Tenchu 2/Fatal Shadows/Time of the Assassins only have the opening song written by him. He didn't work on any other entries like Z or DS.

Yeah, same guy. He did the soundtracks for the first 3 games and the opening theme for Fatal Shadows. Did Way of the Samurai too

Original the best ranking you could get by not killing anyone outside of bosses
In the further ones you must kill everyone to get the best ranking
However, the PS1 ones have terrible draw distance so it might not be for you.
Overall, I'd say just play the second one but the boss fights are basic slop from the era

I sitll remember seeing all the cool shit you could unlock and it was still best to just ignore all the tools and skills for the most part

None of the Tenchu games are that good. First game is the best at making you feel like a stealthy ninja but the controls are awful and the bosses are retarded and don't fit the game.

Played:
1/2/3

Rank:
3 > 2 > 1

All of them are good. 4 also seems pretty good but never played that game. Rikimaru is not a usable character iirc. Instead two women are the protagonists. Many say Tenchu Z was also good but I only ever played the demo to that and its stuck on Xbox as an exclusive for some sad reason. If these games could get a Tomb Raider style remaster that would be pretty sweet.

This. Wrath of Heaven is the best. Fatal Shadows was good too, but it not having a character select and instead forcing you to switch characters each level was annoying.
I would rank the series as follows:
Tenchu Wrath of Heaven > Tenchu Fatal Shadows > Tenchu Stealth Assassins > Tenchu Birth of the Stealth Assassins > Tenchu Z > Tenchu Shadow Assassins > Tenchu Dark Secret

Is the xbox version better? I know it adds in extra features like dragging bodies and sheathing weapons, but anything more substantial than that?
