The vast majority of people will tailor their behavior around what appears to be the cultural norm.
Linux has never had and will never have the same casual media omnipresence that Windows, Mac or phoneslop have had. At most it gets used by one or two antisocial rejects as a joke.
Similarly it also does not get pre-installed on any computers unless it's a bad version like ubuntu that is backed by a corporation.

Most people won't install it because OS installation is beyond them
For those who know how to install an OS Linux is not the simplest option
If they can install Linux they don't know which distro to use
If they know which distro to use they're usually aware of its limitations

Linuxfags have made a labyrinth of their OS, and even when you get to the end, it doesn't work, and if it does, odds are it won't work well. This would be fine if they didn't insist on lying to anyone and everyone that their OS is perfectly functional, because the only thing they care about is increasing the market share at any cost with no thought given to the user experience. I've met very few Linux users that hold realistic estimations of the majority's ability to navigate computer software, and even fewer with the drive to actually address it. Linux involves more troubleshooting than Windows or Apple operating systems, it isn't for people who don't know what they're doing.

compatibility still not up to snuff (you can link me proton shit all you want even compatible games suffer either from horrendous performance need extra time tweaking settings), multiplayer games with anti cheat shit most likely won't work because either muh paranoia over linux cheaters/laziness
Nvidia drivers still crap out on occasion
flatpak repository is filled with outdated shit (your average normie won't ttack thr version number)
some of software (see photoshop, 3D modeling and even some music editors for some reason) don't work or run poorly in wine
distros also have their own eco system, the more obscure yours is the harder it is to find solution to your problem
in short we always on the cusp but still never quite getting there

Colleagues asked me if they should use it and I genuinely couldn't come up with a good reason for them, beyond "I like it and it's fast".
What I like about linux is removed from most variables people think about when they hear "computer".
I don't care about looking like a hacker, the matrix isn't that good.
I have a disdain for monopolies but if they made an OS that was as fast as windows while being easy to use and rock solid I would make the switch (this will never happen lol, they love ads revenue).
I am a contrarian and I'm sensitive to people using me, and unfair stuff in general, but most people aren't. They just pay and forget about it.
I think something centralized like windows and mac makes a lot of sense because most people genuinely don't care. I'm surprised it didn't happen to the car industry yet.
I understand I'm 0.01% of the market, I accept that people like me will never be the norm.
Anyway, factorio is good.

Right now it's for enthusiasts who have too much free time on their hands or third worlders who have a 15 year old shitty laptop (India #1). Because the average person doesn't see a reason to switch. And for gaming? The average person actually cares they can't play current year game because the anticheat says nuh-uh to linux, and probably believes it when devs make statements openly hostile to linux users painting us as an irrelevant minority full of cheaters and hackermen.
Other reasons? Customization? As long as they can set a desktop wallpaper that's enough. Privacy? They probably auto assume you're a pedo-schizo the attosecond you mention this. Some higher open source supporting principles? Lol, lmao even.

I don't recommend it for everyone, I'm just sick of hearing about the windows complaints before they bend over backwards for the next windows version, I even offer to install LTSC versions for fuck sake!
But beyond that, the current discussion is funny with bug reports coming from Linux users, because I have developed software and Windows users fucking suck at reporting bugs. They either go
>THIS ISN'T WORKING! FIX IT! NO, I WON'T TELL YOU HOW IT HAPPENED OR ANY INFORMATION ABOUT MY COMPUTER! THE FUCK IS A LOG FILE?!
or
>This isn't working... ah well, I'll get used to it
That second attitude nearly killed the servers our company uses. I'm glad that I managed to trigger the same bug and realize "Holy shit, this needs to be fixed now!" while other co-workers are like "Ah yeah... I had that happened once."

Because it's still not as smooth as simple as gaming on Windows. I'm on Arch and I've been playing through Left4Dead 2 again with a friend via Steam and the first level crashes as soon as I enter the first hallway and turn right to look into the second room. I went to the web to troubleshoot and figured out that I had to add -vulkan to the command options for the game in Steam. It's mostly been smooth since doing that, but on one of the Left4Dead 1 missions all of the vehicles and some other barrier objects disappeared for the entirety of the level making it so I had to just follow my teammates footsteps to know where the paths forward were. I was also able to see special infected through the invisible walls. I didn't have to deal with any of this on Windows. I'm still sticking with Linux for now and have been able to play everything I've wanted to far, but it just takes more work up front to get the game running. Windows is just treated as the priority for developers on PC.

Yeah it sets up a fake folder structure like c:/program files/game that most games are hardcoded to look for, and places relevant things in there for you, lutris just does all this for you

If you only care about gaming you should just stick to Windows for now. If you want to switch to Linux it should be for reasons other than gaming. Stupid Windows laptop makers trying to get below a certain pricepoint causing them to ship their computers with Ubuntu instead of Windows and then tech illiterate people being flabergasted when their brand new PC cannot run Word and Photoshop.

Any percent is too much. I use a driver from 3 years ago on Windows 10 LTSC because every driver since has had less performance than it.
I will not switch to an OS that suddenly makes my PC perform 5-10% worse for absolutely no benefit. I don't care if Microsoft is collecting data on my gaming PC.

1. the type of person who sees a kernel panic and decides their PC is fucked without looking into it any further
2. the type of person who sees a kernel panic and does enough basic research to figure out how to fix it
most people are person 1, even if they shouldn't be. if you're a millennial or older zoomer who grew up with the internet, then you should be right at home with linux. if you're a mindrotted skibidi then maybe you should stay away.

Being able to run binaries made for a completely different operating system without emulation AT ALL is an achievement unto itself and if all you care about is running proprietary dogshit then you deserve Windows.

When it comes to linux there's a category of people who think it's amazing and does everything right.

These people are mostly autists. They are actually kind of stupid, although they always think they are incredibly intelligent; they are not. They're obsessive and autistic and can focus on a few things well enough, and for years straight, but cannot understand or view the larger picture. They do not have a theory of mind for how other people think or work, either, and lose their temper easily.

These autists see linux threads and cannot understand how people find linux to be complex. Just read the manual, just use the command line, just compile the program. They started playing with linux when they were 12, so you should also have a similar amount of experience and understanding with linux after a week.
This is why you always see these threads falling into a few archetypical responses:

1. People who don't know the first thing about linux, but it sound interesting and they might want to try it
2. Aforementioned autists
3. Normoids who tried linux but it was too complex/retarded for them
4. Guys who've used linux for years, still use linux even as a daily driver, and still fucking hate it

Anyone with an understanding of what people actually want out of their software knows Linux is a massive pile of shit. It doesn't need to be, but the autist group of people, who are also the most obsessive about linux and the most deeply entrenched in its development, ensure it's steady enshittification because they cannot grasp what actual human beings need their software to be like. To the autists, when you tell them the package manager is fucking retarded and you want your mouse options in the settings GUI instead of a fucking text file you only have nano to open by default with (through the command line) with esoteric commands you don't inherently know how to change to get what you want working; that means you are retarded.

And these autistic morons are rife in these threads.

There's no wack. If I don't disable DSC I get random screen artifacts. Even if I were to use DSC, reaching my max refresh rate, what I'd get when enabling adaptive sync is the screen going blank and flickering every now and then because framerates even on the desktop fluctuate wildly. This has been happening for quite a while now. I'm not sure if 580 beta fixed anything but from what I understand those drivers are making everyone's lives harder, so I have my doubts.
Some of the VRR issues can be mitigated by using another desktop like GNOME, but HDR doesn't work properly there. If it doesn't it's pointless to use Wayland.

Just want to clarify what Stenzekretard meant with this post.
First he blames users for using the PKGBUILD HE released, using the -git one just werks.
Then he blames Wayland and guess what, he's a fucking GNOME user and GNOME devs are the ones holding Wayland development back, just google any issue related to Wayland and 99% of the time it's coming from GNOMEfaggots.
Even a Valve dev called GNOMEfaggotdevs out but he may have more success to get his points across to a brick wall because GNOMEFAGGOTDEVS are known for being divas/bitches like Stenzek.

Just read this about why GNOME sucks.

It's also a pain in the ass because you end up just booting into windows 99% of the time anyway, because you'll be doing something like browsing the internet in linux, which works just fine, but then you want to use photoshop or whatever else that just doesn't work in linux, and you swap back to windows and there really isn't anything stopping you from just browsing the internet in windows AND quickly and easily switching to using the software you want without having to reboot.

I really think you ought to have the computer dedicated to either linux or to windows, and never dual boot, because you're really just wasting drive space with an OS you're never using.

The only good way to run windows and linux together is linux with a windows virtual machine and GPU passthrough and that's a huge pain in the ass to set up.

Linux has two things that are definitely holding it back right now:

1. Package Managers
They are fucking garbage. There's probably a place for them somewhere but for userland software they just cause everything to constantly break because some retard thought it was inefficient to duplicate a few hundred megabytes of the same dependencies, so how about we make every program use the same dependencies so when the dependency updates it fucking breaks everything.

2. The overall design of the filestructure. Programs just scattershot across 500 different fucking folders, almost nothing is kept together in one place. There is no "My App I Just Installed" folder in Linux like there is in windows. You want to edit some file related to your software, whether a .dll, a config, some image file - whatever? Well fuck you. Go fuck yourself. The retard autists always try and point at appdata on windows like it's the same, but they are fucking retards who can't grasp that it isn't the same, that appdata and program files are easy to look through and 60 different folders on linux with random fuckass names while jumping back and forth between these different folders constantly when editing, is not easy to use or work with at all.

computers are supposed to be easy to use and work
just imagine switching on your TV with your remote
simple, right?
now imagine it's Loonix, so instead of just grabbing the remote, you need to walk into the kitchen, throw 2 plates against the wall, then scream "RTFM", then punch 5 times against the same wall, and throw another 3 punches against the wall opposite of it
now you need to read a book in reverse, and then jump 3 times
afterwards the TV will turn on

I have not had this in 20 years of using debian stable.
Here's a big tip to all new linux users-
YOU DO NOT NEED THE BLEEDING EDGE.
YOU JUST DON'T.
Bleeding edge means bugs.
Rolling release means bleeding edge bugs ALL THE TIME.
It won't ever get better.

Just use stable releases and upgrade every few years, you don't have to use Debian- Fedora is pretty good, SuSE is loved by many and you can search more, just forget rolling releases, the bleeding edge and other memes.
Remember, --funroll-loops is cancer.

You don't need to use package managers.
Why do you not criticise Windows for this? Games and programs are part of the Windows update catalog, but since you don't use Windows Store, you don't see it.

If you want more software and don't want to deal with a package manager, just download the .appimage - just like you would a portable .exe
Put it wherever you want an double click it to run it.

There is no requirement to use a package manager for anything other than system updates, which is no different to Windows Update and will run automatically just the same (but it won't forcibly reboot your PC)

An abridged history of Windows vs Linux

>Linux perpetually years behind Microsoft in innovation and is generally unsupported
>Years pass, Microsoft comes out with Windows 7
>Linux still years behind
>Microsoft meanders throughout the 2010's. Not only have they stopped innovating, but now they're actively making Windows worse.
>A decade later, early 2020's, Linux finally catches up to Windows 7 in terms of viability as your main operating system in terms of usability and software (wine/proton and good linux alternatives to everything)
Things have gotten to a point where you're either going to suffer learning Linux or suffer putting up with Windows. For many, Linux has become the less frustrating option.

Part of the AMD hate is simply because much like linux users, a good portion of AMD users were insufferable redditors for decades. I wouldn't hate furries if they didn't shit up my boards at some point, same thing with people who were team red even when it sucked big time and had to be all smug about it like they had 240 IQ because they used an athlon xp. Like that future starbucks barrista who enrolled in psychology 101 and thinks he can read and predict everybody, huffing his own farts not realizing everyone wonders who the fuck invited him to the party. 0 exposure to the biggest audience when MS has done irreversible reputational damage to it in the 90-2000's, as they were afraid that they'd gain the market share. Now, fewer developers write for it (desktop usage) and fewer OEMs make drivers for hardware. Also rather a low number of computers ship with Linux, which is one major way to introduce people to it (since many are not bothered to switch what's already installed on the PC).

the point is that the file explorer should be available everywhere.
