What happened during 7th gen that turned everyone into cynics? The start of the generation was all hype dude bros but by 2013 everyone was celebrating failures and a sort of anti hype for 8th gen was fuming. Only cancelled out by the normie crowd which bought despite their negative feelings

Advent of iPhone, social media, and the swarm of normalfags it brought online.
This coincided with the Nintendo's Wii and their new focus on casual gamers, AKA non gamers, who became the main target audience for the industry, resulting not only some major streamlining and censorship of vidya, but also increased focus on mobile and Facebook slop.

Meanwhile, consoles became always online, couch-op was practically killed, and the lazy "lol we patch it later! ;)" mentality spread.

Early 2010s also was the start of the woke movement, with Anita Sarkeesia and Jewtaku pushing the "all gamers are Nazis!!" propaganda. All while the Web 3.0 censoring and removing user feedback, reviews and entire comment section was happening.

We were betrayed and very little has been done to win back our trust.

You have to remember that despite what some anons will say, the generation started off great and I would argue it was still good for a few years after.
It wasn't like things turned to immediate shit when an arbitrary date passed by. Sure, the groundwork for those bad trends were laid down but hindsight is often 20/20 to those things and you could easily have argued for some of them being good or harmless at the time.
By 2013 however, you already had 7 to 8 years of constant slimy and greedy practices right out in the open by companies at the forefront. Hell, 2010 to 2012 were the most egregious on that front with major bullshit across the board. Furthermore, people were just becoming more aware and unable to remain ignorant because they were becoming more overt and that the internet had become more widespread enough, contrast that to the start of the generation where the internet hadn't been that predominantly used yet.
>a sort of anti hype for 8th gen was fuming
And then by this point, there was enough good will lost as well as shit like journalists being outright hostile to their audience that the cynicism was reaching a critical mass. Not enough to make a major dent in the 8th gen but still noticeable.

Games got shit,
normies hijacked the internetnet and the hobby,
and virtue signaling became the favorite pass time of attention whores.

All this only sped up the deterioration of games, resulting the undeniable decline in quality, challenge, longevity, replay-value, and basic features such as private server hosting and modding.

Just goes to show that nothing has changed.
Stagnation is real.
