shouldn't we just call them "open world 2d platformers"?

No, we should keep calling them Metroidvania. That way you can easily spot what games to avoid when you're browsing the Steam discount page.

Search Action is self-explanatory.

Nah, that just makes it sound like Ninja Gaiden but sideways. These games aren't just about action; half the point is mapping out the world in your head and going "oh wait, I can go there now!" after finding a shiny new double jump or laser grappling hook or whatever. Metroidvania at least captures that sense of interconnected progression, even if the name’s kinda cringe now.

Metroidvania sounds cooler, so I’ll stick to that. Search Action is a soulless term used by cretins

Jokes on you I would love for people to use this term since most indie metroidvanias just became hollow shit clones and have more souls elements than both Metroid and Castlevania ones combined, I would rather call them hollowvania than allow them to keep hijacking metroidvania

Hollow Knight is a product of its time, where everyone and their grandma wanted to rip off Dark Souls. The souls mechanics in Hollow Knight actively make it a worse game.

they're basically just exploration games. i dont see why more words are needed. i suppose you could argue that having to collect items to progress means it should be called something else, but to me, exploration basically implies that too. after all, thats where the progression comes from.
