No the point of open world is so the player doesn't feel like they're in never ending series of corridors and hallways pushing them towards the end. To allow them to breathe and choose where they'd like to go next. You still have to craft areas within that open world where interesting things will happen. Or you can be a lazy shit and copy paste a bunch of towers all over the map Ubishit style

People complain about Elden Ring being a mostly empty open world, but it's preferable to, say, Skyrim, where you have ancient ruins every few steps.

Gothic 2 is the best in that regard. The world isn't all that big but you have all sorts of things hidden on the map, like a random hunter just resting on a mountain next to a city, a tomb full of undead paladins under a chapel, a mine full of crawlers next to a bandit tower. None of those places are related to any quests so you only get to discover them if you bother to explore.

Elden ring in the legacy dungeons. But even the actual overworld was head and shoulders above other open world games in quality & design.

I like Mikey and Brenden, but I mean the scene itself with church music while a guy gets shot in the eye relaxing and if it wasn't completely obvious then Big Pussy literally telling Paulie outright that it's a Godfather reference later. The show's success as the series went on went to the writer's heads in a good way. Killings were more practical or chaotic instead of everything being set up perfect to make it as dramatic as possible. In later seasons, "It won't be cinematic" as Patsy would say.

Nah bro. Open world is an emergent idea that was born from game development itself. It's related to level design in the sense that the level must be designed to provide access to everything at once, or at least the illusion of it. In essence the level still exists, but someone thought it was a good idea to take the structure away, or obscure it.

Cyberpunk. Every location is focused on stealth with cctv cameras, hackable machines to distract people, trash cans and boxes to stuff bodies in, guard patrols, back doors, roof top access, snipers, mines, automated turrets you can rip out and use etc. The only thing it's missing is vents, but considering how many ways you can do a mission in cyberpunk I think it makes up for it.
