The courts are at the first stage where they are hoping that everyone will cooperate and be nice, so they're expecting Karl to come forward with a plan. But Karl is not acting in good faith and is trying to subvert the court which is just going to piss them off even more.
All this is going to result is the COURTS coming in and dictating how the money is going to be paid off, and likely in the most efficient manner possible (selling his house most likely). If Karl played nice, he would be the one who gets to decide how he pays the money back.
We're probably going to get round 2 where the courts will smack him down even harder.
