He has a point that FEARs AI is simple that takes advantage of the level design. iirc one of the devs said that they used only three distinct behaviour models for the soldiers that only worked in tight spaces.
Put them in an open area and they'd be jumping back and forth over the same railway.

That AI code is painful to look at. They front loaded all the bullshit so it'd be easier in production as it was modular, sort of like Bethesda's Radiant AI packages in Gamebryo.

The example they gave was for the drone enemy which didn't exist until the very last minute where they needed something new for the last half cause they knew the game was shit. All they had to do was link together the AI modules they needed to make the drone sentry and it was super quick and easy.

I guess HL1 and 2 used the same method for Steve's AI library but way more streamlined.

The FEAR AI is better and is more fun to play against. For some reason people get angry and pretend that it somehow doesn't count because they are designed for small levels.

Lithtech started off as a really dogshit engine that didn't specialize in anything and it very unoptimized and buggy even on XP.
When FEAR released the engine finally matured the fuck up and had some decent features and a good toolset to work with. Monolith had these built-in animation & 3d modeller software which had some basic but very versatile features.
