>ok, you see that rat? press on it with your sword equipped and see what happens
>wow, you just did damage!
>if you do enough damage, the enemy will die, now you try
>good job! now that stuff the enemy dropped? that's called loot, you pick it up by picking it up
>very good, now let's see you kill 10 more rats!
>remember if you get stuck, come back to me so i can explain to you how to kill rats again
>that's 2 rats, 8 more to go!
>don't forget to have your sword equipped to do more damage
>good job, you killed 10 rats! when you complete a quest, you get special rewards, isn't that neat?

vs

>dude take this sword and go kill 10 rats
>you did it you killed 10 rats

this was the right way

MMORPGs were at their best when the player was thrown into the world with minimal tutorialization left to figure shit out by playing and talking to other people playing

I don't get why devs even bother with tutorials anymore, MMO players just look up everything there is to know about the game on youtube before playing anyway.

There's a group of helpless people who seem to want to play video games but can't spend thirty seconds trying to learn how. I don't know if it's low IQ, ADHD, or some kind of lead poisoning but all the tutorials and guides in the world can't help them.

There are WoW players that get to level 50 before they learn what a dungeon is or how to enter one. They don't know how to eat food, they can't equip bags, they use one spell because it sounds cool. I've met warriors that only have auto attack and whirlwind on their bar.

They can't edit the UI, there's screenshots on reddit of people posting a phone photo of their screen and everything's dead center and they're asking how to see what they're doing.

Tutorials are supposedly for these people and I assume they do them but the information must go in one ear and out the other. They are the same people those little help-tooltips are for and they don't even look at those fucking things. They are perpetually lost fools with a map hanging around their neck and a compass chained to their wrist. Do not feel sorry for them.

This is my wife. I have to play for the 10 minutes before she is getting the basic gameplay and begins to play herself. I believe its the years of not playing anything other than "Stronghold crusaders" atrophied her brains

Maybe it is possible that the tutorial is so fucking boring and monotone that people lose all interest in playing because the last thing they're actually doing is playing?
