Super Metroid is boring trash with shit combat, pushover enemies that might as well not exist, floaty jump where you're constantly hitting your head, jerky movement, no way to view or mark doors or points of interest on your map, can only view one small subarea's map at a time, and you spend the whole game constantly shooting and bombing every single tile to see which are arbitrarily destructible, and missing a single tiny detail results in just running in circles for hours retreading the same areas and scouring every inch to see what you missed.

Most hidden items aren't as cryptic to find. The game is designed to be played multiple times and eventually you'll remember where most things are and aim for shorter clear times with less or more collectables.

The main issue is the combat and platforming are both terrible and also provide zero challenge or stakes whatsoever in the slightest.

So what you have is a game where you just endlessly roam and backtrack through long series of generic, samey rooms that all just blend together in your mind as one jumbled, forgettable mess, with enemies and platforming that is more of just a nuisance than actual engaging or challenging gameplay.

What exactly is wrong with it? The controls are a bit stiff compared to the GBA games but it's otherwise a great game and has the best atmosphere out of the 2D Metroids

Fair enough, it's a game from 1994, it was basically inventing the genre so it lacks modern QoL features and the level design isn't as mindful as in modern Metroidvania games. Still it's a 16bit sidescroller at its core, it's pretty short and it's not a game you are supposed to "consume" like you would a modern game but a game you learn and come back to regularly and once you are familiar with it it's easily one of the best in the genre. Give it another shot in a few weeks and if you still hate it there's nothing we can do about it.

It's literally one of the worst action games and one of the worst platformers of all time, so fans have to cope that it's actually about exploration and traversal despite the entire world design just being a series of generic, samey rooms with different arrangements of colored tiles that all just jumble together in a forgettable mess that you constantly retread and backtrack through. And "puzzles" consist of literally shooting and bombing every single tile of every single room just to see what arbitrarily reacts. The game doesn't even have the fucking decency to mark doors on your map or remove items marks from map after found, and you can ony view one region at a time.

Maybe for the first hour, then you adjust to some of the quirks of the gameplay and movement becomes very fluid and natural. If you're constantly bumping your head on the ceiling you are not properly using your jumping abilities, there's actually alot of nuance in the different jumps Samus can do.
