This kind of thing just isn't true. Linux games barely run, and when they don't you need to know programing to make them work again, and even then its just barely.

People shit on windows but the reality is all those tasks in the background are keeping your computer fast and snappy. Go on and try it yourself. They will sit around screeching all day about muh bloat and how they free'd up their every thing, but they have no games and the performance is only the same when you're lucky, and its usually worse 99% of the time.
Windows is the GOAT for a reason.

How are you guys doing on Linux these days? Any games you miss because they won't work for some reason?

I used to use Linux a lot for many years, and at the time Proton wasn't really a thing so the situation was more like "I go on winedb and manually follow the user submitted instructions for my game if it's (hopefully) submitted to the winedb." Nowadays I'm on a mac and the wine situation is mostly the same as it was on Linux in those days, but obviously everyone's been saying Proton is a lot better now.

Everything has worked for me but I don't play competitive games
I kept windows installed just in case
its been 4 years and I haven't logged on to it a single time
Ultimately though this question is so varied depending on who you are and some games involve waiting a little bit for proton patches to release. For example, I couldn't play Monster Hunter Wilds immediately. It didn't take long to get fixed but that could be disappointing for some people in some circumstances.
However, even if I did jump over to windows whenever something like that happened, I would have only had to do so like once or twice, only for a brief period of time, in the last 4 years.
Your best bet to understand if it'll work out for you though is to just look up the games you play on https://protondb.com/
Anonymous No.717860097 [Report]
>>717858639
>>717859746
Do note however, some protondb entries are just kinda out of date if your game is more obscure
Proton improved at such a rapid rate, some games will be a lower rating because of reviews from like 1-2 years ago, even though it just werks now
Its mostly a good way to figure out what works though

im no microkek lover and have used linux for well over 2 decades, and would love to just abandon windows, its absolutely embarrassing how linux hasnt taken more marketshare despite the absurd pajeetism that is windows 10/11

But after reading what kernel level anticheat programs actually do, how much shit sticks around when you remove the game, how effective it actually is, and that they just aren't worth it, Im ready to tell the studios and publishers that release those games to go fuck themselves. I have played through much of my backlog that I've realized years ago that I don't need them. And theres cs and games with private servers that I can play to scratch that itch.

Yeah winemu is the future saar. Linux gaming was tried before and abi breakage because of libraries constantly changing without the option to have multiple versions killed native linux games, just like it kills native linux programs to this day. The idea that what works well on one OS works just as well on another does not exist anywhere in tech and people only pretend this makes sense when criticizing Linux. Linux can run quite well, the idea that it will magically work well with what you exactly happen to have right this second is bit shakier. But this is obvious and true for any change in OS period including other versions of the current OS you use. If this is a hangup then the very premise of changing your OS does to appeal to you and I have no idea why you're talking about other os's at all to begin with.

The workaround for those is to just delete the .mpq video files (or whatever the extension for them is).
And yes, I'm playing the 1.26a version too.

I'm not aware of any other website used for tracking Linux compatibility. The only thing you have is ProtonDB
https://www.protondb.com/

But even it gets out of date when it comes to less popular games. For example, there are some games which started working perfectly as of Proton 9 or Proton 10 (currently in beta), but the last reports were users flagging it as a "Bronze" game and it was only tested with Proton 7.
Also, you'll see Steam Deck reviews by default, which are often also concerned with "does this game work with the joystick".
Compatibility has been improving rapidly in the past 5-6 years. I have around 350 PC games across GOG and Steam, they all work as of the release of Proton 10.

By this, what I mean is tracking Wine compatibility specifically. Proton is just Wine+, but it's only used as a default runner on Steam. Other GUIs (Bottles, Lutris) default either to Wine or Soda, or whatever the Lutris script selects.

>>717907536
Also keep in mind that ProtonDB reports are mainly focused on "I open Steam, I click Install, I click Play, does it work?". And a lot of Linux native games actually either don't work or have issues, but going into settings and selecting "Force the use of Proton" fixes all the issues. So, you'll have a better experience running Windows versions with Wine/Proton than you will running native Linux versions.

>have no idea if these custom dll solutions would also work on Linux
If it's a common dependency you can install it inside Bottles like this
>Bottles > (click on your bottle/wineprefix) > Options > Dependencies
And here you can install shit like specific fonts, dotnet versions, dx versions, Adobe AIR Runtime, etc.

If you already have a .dll and it's not available in the "Dependencies" section, you can just open the bottle/wineprefix and copy-paste the file where needed
>Bottles > (click on your bottle/wineprefix) > menu > Browse Files...
It will open the equivalent of the C:\ drive on Windows, with all the same folders. So it's just a matter of doing the same thing you do on Windows.

That's neat. I haven't used Lutris in a few years so I didn't know about this. Last time I used it it was way too confusing to install things yourself, so I stayed on PlayOnLinux until Bottles was released.
The only thing I used Lutris for was league of legends which I stopped playing years ago anyways.

Can I easily get Mint running games as well as Bazzite or is it really just not as good at that no matter what? Should also mention that I'm using Intel/Nvidia since they've been fine on Windows, but I'm worried about the stuff I've read about how it's better to go all AMD for Linux to avoid performance issues- any truth to that?

Linux mint is great for non-gaming purposes or maybe hardware that's about 2 years old or older. It is based on Ubuntu, and a specific long term support version of Ubuntu which is of now is only a little over a year old. If you have newer hardware, something like bazzite will have Nvidia drivers, and newer Nvidia drivers at that. Mint may have the proprietary Nvidia drivers available, or they may use nvk. Nvk is new but I don't think it's ready to game yet.

It's not really. It's just the GUI that doesn't let you tinker much.
You can install shit system wide with rpm-ostree in the terminal.
You can install a distro within Bazzite using distrobox, and then install any compatible packages. If anything using Distrobox is ideal for tinkering because you don't risk bricking your system.

I would classify that as misinformation. Some distros have older kernels. In Linux your hardware support is tied to the Linux kernel. If you have newer hardware, you will need a newer kernel. Some distros allow you to install newer kernels but usually not out of the box. the Linux kernel also sees new features being added. Like file systems see speed increases as the kernel gets updated. AMD and the new open source Nvidia drivers see upgraded performance. Distros based off LTS distros like mint don't see updated kernels as often. Bazzite being based off fedora gets updated kernels pretty regularly

I think a lot of people who complain about Linux performance must be coming over from Windows using Nvidia, and they're right that performance is often noticeably worse in that case. Something that doesn't get mentioned often enough is that if you're interested in gaming, you should really consider getting an AMD GPU first. You can discredit my post all you want, but the reality is, all the shills will tell you to pick the distro you like or that they recommend for your needs etc, or whatever, but my point is simple; first Linux I've tried was Mandrake and later Mandriva back in...
