I have been doing patches day 1 since 2.1. I haven't bothered with 7.3.

Wuk Lamat and Dawntrail's writing abysmal quality aside, I stopped playing mostly because I have frustrations with how the developers keep homogenizing classes, making healers braindead with their rotations, tanks barely have to worry about positioning or aggro management, and the biggest offenders being how they are stripping away the importance of positionals for melee + making the casters crayon eater friendly. Just to make it clear what Playerscope does is it would grab the IDs tied to an account when it approached a nearby player or used the Search Function it would grab all the data that Square decided would be fun to constantly transmit to your client. There are 2 issues with this.

The player drop-off in 7.2 was pretty severe. Everyone I knew stopped playing. Many of them just gave up mid M8S prog because it wasn't fun to do the mechanics, and most of the rest all quit after clearing.
A few stuck around for Occult, and all of them were incredibly disappointed, and mad that they subbed for another month.

Also very telling that the biggest SE nuthuggers like Mrhappy can't even bring themselves to play the game anymore. Guy never did reclears of the savage tier. Never progged or did reclears of Fork Tower, only leeched his way to a few carries and stopped. He played 7.3 for one day before going back to runescape. I'm not an oldfag like this but with EW ruining the entire narrative for me, (made me like SHB a lot less especially) I was hoping that the reset people constantly claimed would happen in DT would actually happen. I actually like slice of life easygoing cozy adventure stuff, makes me think of the goonies or tintin or something. But nope, even DT shat the bed.
And while I find how bad it is somewhat interesting to think about, the core issue for me is that none of this really makes me want to go back to "play" it. I just get exhausted thinking about doing another shitty dungeon that was designed as difficult as a dungeon I did in level 40. I'm tired of hoping 4 boss fights trying to carry months of attention, not even ults sound interesting to get into because the fun part of solving tbe boss fights have to be "studied" ahead of time because of raiding culture. I didn't mind all this when i felt a semblance of enjoyment playing the jobs and figuring out rotations but I'm completely tapped out. No story changes will make me want to touch this shit, I can just get the experience for hours less just reading a summary, skimming a few reaction threads, then moving on saving money along the way. The culture of players feel disintegrated as well, you would think people using mods to automate playing the game would at least make things easier to find a not mentally ill group but nope, people need to wait for fucking simulations to accomplish clearing most content that is mostly objectively easier than ever before.
I don't think anything can bounce the game back from this, but people apparently return to wow just fine. I've never played it but if people can just easily ignore parts of a long form narrative they don't like then more power to them. But for me, a way I heard this explained decently is if there is so much to do but with no depth to back it up, it can destroy immersion and motivation and just leave things boring and shallow.

Fair point, XVIs biggest crime is that it is too easy, and that affects the gameplay of an action system more than any other genre. This meant the combat loop and options couldn’t be too difficult or complex bc that would be too hard. So you do the same combo for 30 hours while occasionally adding in an Eikon ability. The game is simply too formulaic. That will never stop. I hate knowing that the next patch will be a raid and an ex trial, and the one after that will be a 24man and an ex trial, and the one after that will be a raid and an ex trial, etc. I hate knowing that the expansion will have one deep dungeon, 1 Eurekalike, 3 beast tribes. It's just boring. There's no excitement. There's only so many years of that one can put up with.
EW climax was already shit and rushed so I feel like I've gotten enough out of the story and don't need to see more. Wish I stuck around to see the last 24man in EW for the twelve story but oh well.
