How do they top Botw and Totk, considering these are the most revolutionary games in the genre made in the past 30 years?

I still think BotW and TotK need to be a trilogy.
And I like the idea of the same map being adjusted and covered with water a-la Wind Waker, and leaning into sea exploration with a boat.
Maybe even the central hub of TotK in Hyrule Field, turn that concept into a boat you can pilot around.
Add in swimming/underwater exploration like in Ocarina.

Gameplay-wise I liked TotK a lot, but story-wise I thought BotW was more cozy and pure feeling.
So I'd also work in an element where the TotK world and the BotW world are basically two overlapping timelines. Time travel fuckery (also to explain why the Ancient Sheikah ruins from BotW disappear and are replaced with the Zonai ruins in TotK). So both BotW and the TotK world co-exist and neither are "the true timeline" - third game is about creating a synthesis of the two.

And then go in a bit more on nostalgia, at least gameplay-wise. Have Link get classic items like the hookshot, lock-on boomerang from WW, have the level design be tighter - where each island on the map is a tighter challenge area (they kinda did this already with the Sky Islands).

One final effort. One more ultimate BotW/TotK game that hones in and refines it all even further.
There's a ton of shitposting around these games, especially TotK, but the truth is they are really great.

Why does it need to be a trilogy? I too would like a water themed game next

I already thought that was the idea with the timeline. Breath of the Wild didn't quite happen the way the game portrays, because in TotK Zelda goes back in time and impacts stuff, and the events of BotW are disturbed as a result.

It doesn't need to be, but somehow I think it'd feel right.
Also, if, in the unlikely scenario they run with this idea for whatever reason, they should combine Zonai, Ancient Sheikah, and Cyclades aesthetics. They'd pull the people who love Frutiger Areo

That makes a lot of sense.

yeah it allows both games to be direct sequels and exist on split timelines, which is now a running theme with the franchise I believe

I envision a game where rupees are very important, there's an NPC schedule with branching events and narratives requiring replaying the game to see them all, and a heavy focus on overworld exploration. Survival and crafting in Zelda probably isn't what you're imagining it is right now, which is why you're being a spaz.

The underground should have not-sucked ass and been empty. If the Depths had had more substance and not-sucked ass and been empty, it would have been the GOAT. I always wanted a fully 1:1 underworld that's Iike the show, basically a massive dungeon with varied terrains and connections to and from the overworld. That would have been great and not-sucked ass and been empty.

Exactly, it's like TotK isn't so much a sequel as it is a retcon disguised as a continuation. Zelda going back screws with the events of BotW off-screen, and then you’re just kind of left to accept the new status quo without any real in-game explanation. Makes both games feel like they’re dual realities bleeding into each other-almost like the devs gave up trying to make canon timelines make sense and just leaned into “whatever feels cool.” Honestly, I’m fine with that. The lore's been nonsense since the split timeline BS anyway.

Considering that Skyrim mogged Skyward Sword at the game awards over a decade ago I can see this happening with how Baldurs Gate 3 mogged Tears of the Kingdom.
