linux gamers, what distro do you use and why? do any of them make a difference in performance?

I use Bazzite.
Gentoo has better performance if you compile everything for your specific hardware, Cachy has better performance if you have a newer CPU that its kernel modifications take advantage of.
Anonymous No.717864064
everything is pozzed to some extent, but I settled for Xubuntu after dicking around with Arch and Debian for a bit on my own. there are marginal performance differences, but usually the ones with the newest kernel and Mesa are the ones with the best gaming performance. find a desktop environment you like and then go from there.
Anonymous No.717864071
I unironically use Gentoo. Performs excellent but definitely not worth swapping to if you just want performance for obvious reasons.

Distros don't matter too much for general gaming performance other than whether it runs x11 or Wayland unless you're on some completely ass distro.

with bleeding edge hardware, you're possibly leaving some performance on the table using lts distros, since it's a while before they update the kernel. on the plus side, they're usually solid as fuck
i'm on ubuntu rolling

> do any of them make a difference in performance?
Rolling Distros have AMD driver updates sooner
If you have a newer CPU, some distros provide libraries compiled with modern CPU optimization flags.
Some distros offer or include the Zen kernel, which improves latency and better CPU scheduling for smoother and more consistent gaming performance.
I wouldnt worry about that if you are new, you might overload yourself.

The Linux gaming thread on /vg/ is dead again, but there's a new Linux gaming thread almost every time I look at /v/ (and this time, two of them). Sad but not surprising. The general isn't as exciting because the Windows fan club leaves it alone and there's no retard drama.
When you guys in the latest wave of new Linux users finally realize that there's no point in advertising Linux to people who have no interest in it, maybe we can have a general that stays alive on weekdays. Until then, I guess there's no rule against a weekend-only general. I'll make a new one myself if I don't see one on Friday.

Google image search sucks and most of us are too lazy to find that PERFECT image for an ephemeral shitpost.

If you refer to >>717871373 just getting certain things to work is a game in itself. Sometimes you need to package software like certain mod managers yourself, because it doesn't work like a normal distro.
But also yes. I do play games. Playing through square enix backlog right now. Got done with kingdom hearts, now playing through ff15, might play through ff16 afterwards, unless I feel like playing something else.

Is AMD preferred? Yes. Is NVIDIA anywhere near as bad as people make it out to be on Linux? No, and it hasn't been in 5 or so years.

It is also true that Nvidia has become better than it used to be. Their own team is actually working with freedesktop.org(or really freedesktop is meeting them halfway on Nvidias needs).
The open source vulkan driver nvk is seeing fast development, in a few more years, people may prefer the open source driver for gaming over the official driver like they do with amd today.
