Because he's never beating this maze, LLMs are just too dumb to do this on their own without direct intervention or specific step-by-step instruction on how to do it. He got through the maze ONCE in the entire 2 months he'd spent on it. But the 2nd floor maze. And that was EARLY in the run too. He got lucky, then realized that the 2nd floor stairs got him into a room that wasn't 4th floor with the Lift Key.

That was the HARDER of the maze as well. He'd need a lot of TIME or a lot of LUCK to get through the 3rd floor maze, however.

And then do it AGAIN for the 2nd floor maze in order to actually ride the Lift to Giovanni.

b3 has this massive pocket at the start that is a giant dead end trap that teases you with the stairs right next to it, and a tiny side entrance at the start he keeps missing.

b2's exits are both something you can only go for after going INTO its traps, as opposed to b3

I want Claude to make it. I want him to get the Lift Key. But the LLM's attention span is so short that I know he'll have to stumble into it through blind luck, while not even realizing he has to do it in specific order. It's not impossible, but it's somewhat improbable.
Anonymous No.717888869 >>717888957 >>717889134
99% sure 4.1 won't make it through before the upgrade. Pretty sure the next version, 4.2 will be the same. Going to need some major upgrades/breakthroughs for it to make it through the spin maze. This includes being actually able to see and discern different things as well as mapping stuff out. Also, get rid of navigator and having single inputs instead. Targeting (19, 18) constantly and not knowing what's getting in your way is just madness on repeat.

Imagine Claude actually seeing trees and not himself as the Captain or Surge.

I'll check in periodically to see if Claude is gooning in his little corner or if he's made any progress. Or if he changes objective and tries to enter Erica's gym. Then after a week I'll check in every week to see if anything has happened, or if there's a new upgrade (somebody will be first to post a thread just like this time around).

This is the most interesting and also the most boring part of the run. Because of seeing if Claude can solve the puzzle, but also how he ends up stepping on the same tile pushing him back 10,000 times.

Safari Zone will be much more interesting given how big the map is.

Anonymous No.717890051 >>717890137

He can figure out the solution if you explain it thoroughly to him by simple process of elimination.

>I stepped on 15,19 and I got sent back
Did you try stepping on 15,20?
>I stepped on 15,20 and I got sent back
Did you try stepping on 15, 21?
>I stepped on 15, 21 and I got sent back
Did you try stepping on 15, 22?

The problem is twofold. By using the navigator Claude doesn't realise what tiles he's stepping on, and he doesn't have the memory to remember the previous tiles he stepped on.

The purpose of the stream was never about entertainment or being a content creator. It's a pet project of the dev but also a fun way to benchmark each different claude model. Harness stays unchanged, kept minimal so Claude's "logic" has to do most of the heavy lifting of his navigation. By sticking with one particular version of one game and not altering the harness much, you can get an idea of how the AI has improved between each new model release (new one comes out every 3 months or so). In the beginning he said it was so boring it wasn't even worth streaming, but once it was able to consistently leave the room he thought maybe people might get a kick out of it. I doubt he expected as many people to care about it or make OC and all that like they have to this point, but he's stuck to his guns rather than caving in to the pressure to do something "new" just for the sake of entertaining people. The hints he added to speed up trashed house and a few other things are the closest, specifically meant for "content" purposes because twitchfags complained.

Imagine taking your old ass boomer parents (or grandparents if you’re a zoomer), who have never played video games before and ask them to beat Pokemon. “Gamers” underestimate the skills needed to actually get through a game, even one for children. We grew up playing games from a young age, and that’s when the human mind is like a sponge. The concepts of directional input to move your character, how progression works in games, likely solutions to puzzles and secrets etc. Every person who plays games can beat games easier because of the experience they had from playing other games. If you take someone who has never played a video game before, it’s going to take them time to come to grips with it, especially if they’re not familiar with technology. As a more extreme example, try giving a gameboy to an uncontacted tribe of “savages”. They might eventually figure it out, but just soon as smash it with a rock. If those savages had been born in a “civilized” place, with access to that technology at a young age, it would be secondhand nature for them to beat and clear a game.

We've had reinforcement learning AI beat pokemon eaisly. It's just that type of AI doesn't talk to you like a redditor. It just does its job as efficiently as possible, and must be trained on specific task to become optimized at it. With repetition, it becomes accurate as it chases after user set "goals" which incentivize certain behaviors.

Claude on the other hand is an LLM, i.e. a chatbot. An LLM is not designed to play games, while still technically being considered "AI", and being able to generate text, code, and work as a glorified search engine, the fact that it can play a game at all is pretty impressive, because these types of AIs are not trained to play games whatsoever. They're trained to read text, generate text, and predict text. Controlling a character in a game is beyond their scope and yet, when set up a certain way on a game where standing around wont penalize you, he can manage alright. If you want a more efficient AI that will simply beat the game as possible without any conversational frills, those definitely exist. Pokemon has already been beaten by a few different types of AI, but they had to be repeatedly trained to play the game over and over and over again until they get the right results.

Claude has a handicap beacuse he has to use his "logic" and vision to come up with things he wasn't trained to do. He doesn't learn from playing. Everything he knows come from his "version", he cannot be altered by user prompts.

Gemini is an LLM, but ChatGPT (also an LLM) beat it without any cheats. Just a very strong harness.

If you want to see a different type of AI that beat it without any "hints", then reinforcement learning has done it, and there's a few different projects, but I know of one that has beaten the game, and there might be more.

And here's a video to better visualize how this AI differs from LLMs. It's a bit old, and I'm not sure if this guy has made progress, but it's a good walkthrough on how everything works.

and to be more specific, a harness is just the tools that the AI is given to interact with the world. ChatGPT was given a full blown automap, and all sorts of bells and whistles that our Claude doesn't have. I don't believe it was cheating, but the Gemini plays one DID receive blatant hints while also having an overpowered harness. Claude's tools are much, MUCH more minimal, so he has to rely way more on his "logic", but his logic isn't even real logic. It's just him pretending to be logical. It's all very strange...

ChatGPT basically was given advanced information from the game state, and his map kept track of where he had been and where he hadn't been. They were also given indicators to see what's a cut tile and what's not, and all that.

Conversely, Claude doesn't get any of that on top of only being limited to seeing what tiles are on the screen. He has no knowledge of what's beyond there and he has now way to remember it outside of his notes, which he doesn't read to well and often erases.

This is an intentional choice. The dev is not trying to speedrun pokemon with Claude by giving it lots of strong tools. It wants to give it the bare minimum amount of tools to interact with the world and have its reasoning do all of the heavy lifting. It is given a very little amount of information from the game's ram state, and of course we have the entire CC system and all that. That counts as part of the harness. But point being, what fucks up Claude the most is his inability to navigate. Improve the navigation system by giving him access to the location of everything, then yeah it's gonna make it a lot easier. I don't remember how it beat rocket hideout, but I do think ChatGPT was given "hints" towards each next objective, but they were nowhere near as explicit than the gemini's one where he would just straight up tell it what to do and give it the exact coordinates of where it needed to go. GPT's system was that it's map would genearate as it explored, like playing an open world game or whatever. Once he had been to place, he remembered it essentially. So with enough exploring, and a little bit of hints, along with way more information from ram state to know what tile is what, it makes it way way easier.

Meanwhile the only information Claude gets from the ram state is the tiles on screen, that's it. And all he knows is if it's impassable or a passable tile, so like a hard surface(could be a trainer, or even transitional layer like a ladder or door) or an open space.

>Meanwhile the only information Claude gets from the ram state is the tiles on screen, that's it.
Ran out of space here but this isn't 100% true, was mostly talking about his navigation.

Claude gets a couple of more details from the ram state.
1. The pokemon in his party and their health.
2. The name of the location he is currently in. So if he transitions into route 10, he will have "route 10" be in his ram state. If he enters a house, it generally has an assigned name to it like "trashed house" in celadon.

So to sum it up, Claude knows he's in rocket hideout. He knows about the tiles that are visible on screen, but only if they are pasable are not. He knows the health and names of his pokemon in his party (but not in his PC, so he often forgets who he even caught), and he can draw information from the notes he rights after prompting CC after each action, which acts as its short-term and long-term memory, which often has to be cleaned up to prevent him from getting confused or remove erroneous assumptions he's made.

yeah, sometimes that information isn't always accurate. So claude's own navigation system can trick him. It's very vague when compared to the other souped up harnesses that GPT and Gemini got, to put it simply. Which means Claude has to rely heavily on his ability to interpret what's on screen using his "vision", and make a decision from there. So when you understand just how insane that is, it's crazy to think he's even gotten this far. Because his logic isn't the same as us. He's basically just saying something that he thinks would sound like logic, and is somehow able to derive a "truth" from that. Does he even believe what he says? No, because he can't believe. There's no such thing for him, but he sure makes it look convincing. That's the entire job of an LLM. To look pasable as a human, and to conversate like one, but they don't function the same at all. Despite that, he's gotten to where he is because that artificial reasoning just keeps getting stronger and stronger with each iteration.

I'm pretty sure GPT wasn't, it just had a GPT who's job was to keep it on task, and because it wasn't suffering from massive amounts of failures due to poor navigation and blindness, it didn't fight the list of tasks it needed to achieve and every LLM knows from scraping the internet during training. There might have been some difference in how the harness presented GPT's feedback on what next to do that gave the impression it was being handheld or fed a walkthrough, but I'm fairly certain was purely operating under it's own guidance, just with a much more robust set of tools as you note. Gemini was the one where the dev was feeding it hints.

Wrong, Claude does not learn and will never learn. He was born fully retarded and will remain as such because LLMs don't change outside of their initial training, and as such you could run him until the heat death of the universe and he'd only get past this puzzle by pure luck and chance.
