Just like Enchant Farm, it's nonlinear and heavily interconnected. The combat system is not as intricate, but the multi-action economy has its own charm. Chaining buffs and different spells together is a lot of fun.
This only applies to BS2, the combat system in 1 is shit. 1 is still nonlinear, but not as interconnected as 2. It's Dark Souls 2-style nonlinearity, not Dark Souls 1.

That's hilarious, since Enchant Farm is only difficult at the start. Once you have some type coverage you can handle almost anything you come across, and once you can start changing your passives the difficulty breaks in half until the absolute end of the game.

Grinding helps given that skills are unlocked at certain level thresholds and IIRC level factors into the actual damage formula, but it won't solve everything (and level cap on a regular run is 250 anyways, along with a passive nerf to soul gain once you're a high enough level IIRC because fuck you). My go-to party for 99% of the game was Burst I (who I started with and really could just be replaced for someone else unless you feel like dealing with her type gimmick shit, I ended up using her as a general tank later on with additional Paint Smear fuckery), Water I (who later became Blood Water in my run), Wind I, and Flame I. Wind I survives a lot better than you might expect when invested into, and can do some pretty good damage in her own right. Water I was originally my support, the Blood Water event made me change her into an almost completely selfish offensive unit, and Fire I was kept around for some very nice damage with innate revival support.
If you haven't been keeping up on weapon/armor crafting you really should save first and start fucking around with it, there's some very strong weapons and armor you can get surprisingly early on if you're thorough with exploration, generally I leaned towards shit that gave good passives like healing or crit/status immunity and so on over focusing on type matchups specifically.
The passive swapping shit is from a guy somewhere in the dungeons, behind a door that you need a top-tier crystal key for IIRC. Those passives are massively important, I especially recommend the passive healing (10%/turn) and autorevive (20% chance per turn) on almost everyone, with those you can play a lot more loosely than you could otherwise. The HP one is pretty solid too, capping out at +50 HP when most of your fuckers probably end up somewhere in the 100's at max level from what I remember.

Red hoods woods crawled so BS1 could walk so BS2 could run. There's an obvious increase in quality in each sequel but it's obvious the creator is learning everything as he goes. I hope we all live to see BS3 fly.
