Mario Kart World has good bones but Nintendo themselves seem to hate the idea of people being able to actually have fun with it. If Kirby Air Riders is just a true sequel to Air Ride, I think you're right. However, this is a game that's been in development for over three years now, with Sakurai holding over 30 years of directing experience under his belt, vs a game he only directed for a few months to save after 10ish years of directing. Air Riders is going to release in the first year of the most lucrative console launch in the most lucrative time of year for game releases (Holiday). As noted by other commenters, Kirby is a mid franchise with FL being a stand out seller, but this game is launching in the much less crowded field of Switch 2 first party titles. I don't expect it to beat FL in sales (just every other kirby game), but acting like it's impossible over the course of Switch 2's lifespan, given how starved nintendies are for big switch 2 games, is just silly. This game likely has content beyond just the racing and city trial mode as we knew it in Air Ride. I don't even think review scores really matter as long as it hits 8s, I just think Sakurai truly nails the presentation of his games in a way that is rare even for the big Nintendo titles. You can tell there is love put into them all, even if they have shortcomings. Uprising, Air Ride, and the Smash games all have their own faults but it is undeniable that there is intention and care put into every choice, and with each game he gained more experience. With his pay coming from sales, there's incentive to create something that will have something for everyone. He also had genuine pride when talking about Dreamland still being the best selling Kirby game before FL usurped it, and has talked numerous times about how the more people play a game, the more the game matters.

There truly is a Nintendo bonus for some Nintendo titles, and as long as Air Riders is good, I think it will get that bonus. Very high 80s/Very, very low 90s metacritic is my guess. Mark my words!

MKW alone was enough to make me return my Switch 2. The tacked-on shallow open world and their fascist insistence to frequently force intermission tracks on the player was a terrible first impression for the system, and kinda made me realize something that I couldn't put my finger on for a few years on until now: Nintendo kinda has no idea what the fuck they're doing anymore in game design, at least when it comes to big-picture cohesion of mechanical design philosophies and concepts. Individual ideas and moment-to-moment gameplay are still usually done very well, but they struggle to put them together in harmony.
