This series is kind of writing itself into a corner with how the timeline is advancing
>currently the timeline sits at 2296, over 200 years since the bombs dropped
>civilisations have advanced far beyond the point of simply living in scrapyards and surviving day by day
>Bethesda simply wants to make a post apoc RPG without lore fluff
>constantly try to either retconn shit or reset stuff that didnt need resetting or just ignoring overal progress and have people live in scrapyards
I dont see why Bethesda is this determined to make Fallout their own thing while holding onto the old lore
>They can reboot, fans of the old games wont be pissed and every retcon can be brushed off
>they can make a game set not long after the bombs dropped in a unused location, giving them freedom to do what they want
Add in the tv show making things even more complicated, and the fact that we wont see Fallout 5 until the 2030's after the show probably passed several seasons establishing its own lore
i dont see how they can continue this while pleasing the fanbase

You can always set the games back in the timeline. In fact, it's kind of stupid that Fallout 3 and 4 are set hundreds of years after the bombs fell. While everything looks like it only happened a handful of years ago.

If you are making something as simple as Doom then yeah, story and setting doesn't matter as much.

Todd howard should let brian fargo and Inxile make a fallout game. A big budget fallout game that's like wasteland 3 would be kino. https://youtu.be/tjeRn2eA3y4?si=WHQRDR-b7-b4MY3H

Fallout 2 is a meme, but somehow it did help to set up New Vegas. I guess because New Vegas takes place in a different area and ignores some more silly parts of 2.

Story is not important in a role playing GAME, where you PLAY the role, i.e. your class and abilities and so on. All you need is a dungeon full of baddies to work your way through.

>set new game in series on the east coast, meaning that you don't have to disturb the original lore
>actually fuck that lets add the exact same things in and set it to be 200 years after the original games for no reason

it's just so stupid

Yes, less silly but theme park is an apt description.
It's not a story.
And no, I don't think 3 had a story either.

Yes I like games with stories.

They set it on the East coast because Bethesda is a game studio located in Bethesda Maryland which is basically a suburb of Washington DC and so the studio was much more interested in making what they knew. Washington DC.

Fallout 3 feels like a jet induced fever dream. You can say it's the fault of Bethesda, but Fallout 4, despite various flaws, doesn't feel like that. Meanwhile 3 is just uncanny.
Anonymous No.717901205 >>717901394

Yeah sure, but they also had creative freedom to make their own version of
>what does the east coast look like in this universe?
but instead they just took the BOS, Enclave, Radscorpions, Super Mutants etc. and called it a day. I understand some fanservice being in the game, but what Bethesda did is just lazy, regardless of the reason for setting it on the east coast.

Enclave would be in DC though. And the brotherhood would absolutely want to look for tech at the capital.

You can't go "well look how advance the west coast is" and then go shocked Pikachu when they vertibird to the east coast.

Honestly, my main issue with the Enclave in Fallout 3 is how lame they are. I actually bought the once in Fallout 2 were the successor of the American government just out of the sheer menace they brought and how horrific their ultimate plan is. The Enclave in Fallout 3 feel like shitty jobbers.
Anonymous No.717901591
Bethesda is very happy to just reduce Fallout to a series of recognisable icons and memes
>Vaults and Vault Boy
>bottle caps
>power armour
>Super Mutants
>the Brotherhood of Steel
>the Enclave
>shanty towns and three hundred year old skeletons lying in the street

Fair enough, but everything else is also copy-pasted from the earlier games. Would've been more interesting to see what animals were mutated on the east coast and what experiments were going on that created even crazier stuff.
I wish we would've gotten to see more varied chapters of the BoS, they did it a little bit but not nearly enough for it to feel different. The Enclave is also really lame in 3 as >>717901485 pointed out.
I don't hate FO3 though, I still enjoy it for what it is, but I just wanted some unique new stuff to discover in terms of enemies and factions.

The main issue with the series is that it naturally progresses to civilization recovering long after the bombs fell but Bethesda refuses to accept that and keeps building the world like the bombs dropped a decade ago.

Yeah exactly, that’s what always bugged me too. You’re over 200 years after the bombs dropped and on the other side of the country - yet somehow it’s still the exact same shit restarting all over again. No evolution, no rebuild, just recycled themes and factions. You’d think people would’ve mutated new weird religions or ideologies like the Hubologists from 2 or something. Instead we get mutants in subway tunnels again and Liberty Prime screaming about communism.

And yeah, different BoS chapters could've been a goldmine for worldbuilding. Imagine a chapter that completely abandoned tech hoarding in favor of some weird post-tech monk-like lifestyle, worshipping knowledge. But nah, they're just diet US Army again. Bethesda’s fallout is afraid of getting weird.

Fallout has a completely fractured fanbase, like Starwars. You have actual fans who care about things like consistency, fake fans who only like the poor quality new installments because it's the popular thing, and fans who just dont even care but call themselves fans. Bethesda doesn't give a shit; should have been clear when they made Fallout 3, should have been clear when they released a buggy mess full of microtransactions.

It’s more Bethesda is writing it into a corner. They treat every area like it’s a one and done thing. No matter what they do it’s always going to be like that. There is so much finality to everything. It’s gotten to the point where they have to start encroaching westward for shit to place games. And I know it’s what they’re doing since the show was just to see what they could get away with. They could have easily set it out east and they even film parts in New York State. They’re going to fuck up the west the same way they did the east. BoS wank, “and some how the enclave returned”, make everyone live in scrap heaps, generic raiders with no identity outside of being raiders, ugly ass prototype power armors that were deployed fifteen minutes before the bombs fell, retarded fallout 4 guns, piss huffing ghouls. It’s all going to be there. And the normalfags and consumers will eat it up.

bethesda is petty. I mean jesus there hasn’t been a new fallout in years, doing some quick and easy(?) project like a console port would at least get some brand attention.

Fallout needs a reboot where the bombs are dropped in 1977 instead of 2077 and the games are planned in advance to keep the world coherent. They got one gopd game and since then have gone ahead through asspulls and improvisations, and the lore is currently a fucking mess tjst falls apart as soon as it is examined

It doesn’t, they just need to retcon 3, 4, and 76 out of existence and just redo 3 but set it immediately after the bombs fell. Instead of BoS just have it be a splinter of the Enclave that aren’t psychopaths.

>Instead of BoS just have it be a splinter of the Enclave that aren’t psychopaths.
My pitch for a FO3 remake, or reboot, would be a cold war between an Enclave Purist Supremacist in Raven Rock and a Enclave rogue expedition, settled in the Pentagon, that just wants to restore America and has not that many qualms about ruling over wastelanders and even allowing them to join

They should just keep making mindless garbage like fallout 3 with skeleton families at the dinner table. It's all Bethesda was ever good for and all they'll ever be good for. Any attempt to innovate will just make things worse. Just stop ever mentioning the year so it can be in an eternal slide.

Main problem is nobody remotely competent has touched the franchise in 14 years. Other than that Bethesda seems to think that Fallout is nothing beyond Nuka Cola, Vaults and old songs about the apocalypse which is why they are doing what they are doing, they will never try to do anything other than regurgitate the same surface level aesthetics from the older games

Setting is weird anyway. Why is Capital Wasteland devoid of plant life, for the most part? It doesn't make sense, unless Fallout radiation works differently.
