Why Magical Girls as a genre never had any real presence in vidya?
It's mostly licensed games or cheap, not particularly ambitious stuff.

How would you make it work for a videogame?

Good question. I don't know either, doubt that there is no overlap between people who would watch these shows and people who play games.

You get into edgy shit instead to appear mature and start separating yourself from what you actually liked. Then you slowly but surely realize this is retarded as fuck and your kid self was right all along... well, for people who don't permanently get stuck into that mindset anyway.

The real sin and shame is that there are almost no good Pretty Cure games.

Because despite outward appearances the superhero part is not that important in magical girl shows. These shows are designed to appeal to girls and thus are mostly about problems that appeal to girls, like helping stray animals, taking care of little kids, solving relationship problems and so on so forth. If you want older magical girl shows, like, way older, you'll see that magical ability is used to solve those crises directly. After Sailor Moon the dramatization shifted to fighting some kind of monster but it's really just a sublimation of the episodic conflict, usually connected to the emotional drama de jure, and after beating the monster the problem somehow gets resolved. Therefore it can be concluded that magical girl genre is less about fighting and conquest and more about girly drama which is not that suitable for video games unless you're, oh I dunno, fucking Persona?

nta but you do know that madoka wasnt even close to the first "edgy" magical girl series right? You're just proving anon right by thinking every magical girl show is just precure derivatives

There are shows where the focus is absolutely the superhero part and the girls are designed for a male audience, it's a pretty wide genre.

>>717901327
No, not M*doka. That's a magical show franchise in the same way DDLC is a romance novel. Which is to say, it's focused on being meta, not in the "4th wall break" way but in the "deconstruction" sense.

Magical Girl stuff is pretty short on actual fighting.
>"Toshikun totally likes you, Keiko!"
>20 minutes of giggling and a scene at the beach
>monster shows up
>"By the power of the love goddess, I will avenge all broken hearts!"
>5 minute transformation scene
>"Love buster attack!"
>monster turns into sparkles
>"You did it again, Keiko! You're so pretty and cool!"

the magia exedra gacha game is fun if you like madoka magica and like honkai star rail's general combat system. it's tweaked a bit, but i like the tweaks. and it doesn't have the overworld, but i didn't find that added much in HSR anyway.

but i do agree with you OP. it's an underutilized set&setting for vidya gaems

mahou shoujo xcom, but openxcom style, not the new one
>demonic forces invade earth
>assemble a squad of magical girls to defend the earth
>xcom-style difficulty, mahous frequently die
>destructible environments
>geoscape and battlescape, basebuilding etc
>dreadful and opressing atmosphere
