This is actually the traditional undergarment of a very particular Chinese dynasty. It was different before and after the period this particular undergarment style was worn. Most notably the "shorts" on this garment would have had long legs instead traditionally. They'd both sleep in this garment and wear it under their clothes during the day. They'd scent the undergarments before wearing them as a way of dealing with body odor because deoderant wasn't a thing. This combined with scent oils they'd work into their skin after bathing tending to mean you had both scented bodies and scented garments mingling and then smells like incense or whatever on top of that. Then there was the practice of "scent pouches" which women would make for men that would have aromatic herbs in them.
These are the sorts of things people had to do before deoderant was invented I guess.
