What ever happened to the Car Combat subgenre? Was Twisted Metal the only one to actually do it right?

Cyberpunk has cars that fire missiles and rockets n shieet. Get some wanted stars and this is the closest thing you'll get to a modern Twisted Metal game.

Video games are an art form. People conceive of a vision by whatever means, be it dreams, philosophy, or some other reason. Many times they are simple toys. It depends on the scope of the vision. Consider a game like Mario, which took platform jumping and added screen scrolling, plus powerups that increased the excitement temporarily. This is a coherent final vision, and once it is achieved, there is no need to do it again. Barring some form of improvement or small tweak, like we see in SMB3 or SMW.
Modern gaming is a corruption of this artform. Buyers have been tricked into becoming consumers. Which means they're just digesting the stories of the day forever in perpetuity. The idea that they can play any game they want is almost meaningless to them, because the game itself not what they're looking for. You are a part of this with your "Car combat subgenre" question. If you wanted the game, you'd play it. But you don't want the game. You want a new game. And so this farce continues. Groups of people come together to attempt to steal and otherwise usurp the attention of the masses which is paid almost exclusively to the most potent forms of addiction. In other words: Why would anyone steer a clunky vehicle to shoot their opponent when it's far more rewarding to turn jump, leap, and fire with the agility of a man? Satisfaction comes quicker in more simple games.
You see, games are not continually released, sequelized, casualized, etc because they're going fulfilling a need or improving on anything at all. Games are released to extract money from the biggest group of fools over and over and over again.

They had zero chance of survival in the esports and liveservice addiction era. They were fun for a few hours at sleepovers but would instantly have the fun optimized out of them if a multiplayer one was attempted today.

After not seeing any for years I've suddenly seen a bunch of car combat indie games in the last week so I assume that is why people are suddenly talking about Twisted Metal again.
>Fumes
>Chaos on Wheels
>Redline Crooks
Haven't tried any of them to see if they are shit or not

Only Twisted metal 1 and 2 were good. The others are middling at best.
