As a DMC fan it's kinda hard to hate on NG, even at its worst. It's the only other action franchise that has real substance but doesn't feel like it's trying to copy DMC or lagging behind it. I don't think they're perfect games (DMC has plenty of flaws too) but there's basically nothing out there that hits the spot the way these two properties do.

Started replaying NG2.
It's a bit easier than I remember it on Warrior. Maybe it will change on Mentor and MNM. What's definitely easier is getting Master Ninja ranks. Almost every single chapter I've gotten Master Ninja.
Also remembering why there's only a couple of chapters and handful of fights outside of those that it is you see in NG2 videos online, a lot of it kinda sucks. The combat is crazy fun though and there's a lot of weapons to pick between.
Also runs pretty badly on original hardware.

Nah, it fixes several flaws with original 2. Doesn't keep all the aspects that 2 purists love about it either, but they're quite a ways there.
It has a better boss roster than Sigma 2 and OG2
It removed some of the worst sections from the original game (tunnel worm etc)
It removed some of the worst sections of Sigma 2 (statue fights etc)
It has Enma's Fang which is awesome
People say that they removed all the enemies, but that's not really true either.
The two-three major encounters that 2 purists hated the game for got fixed.
There are several encounters that actually have more enemies than in original 2, there are even some places where there are enemy encounters were there weren't in OG2. Of course there are also encounters that are not the same as OG2, but it's not as black and white as purists want to make people believe, not anymore.
The performance is way better compared to 2 on original hardware
Sure there's still some flaws with this release, like some moves not working the way they are intended to and not all encounters being 1 to 1 with original, but it's more than a good version of 2.

The water dragon is a good example.
It was an awful fight, because of the fish and having to stay above water. Sigma 2 then just locks you in a small space that you can't get knocked out from and calls it a day.

Most of the issues with the water dragon come from the water, locking you to the platform solves all of them and turns it into an average fight that you at least have multiple methods to approach and multiple attacks you have to deal with in different ways to fight it most effectively keeping it somewhat interesting. You don't judge a fix by the size of the change, but by the result. The only part it gets explicitly worse is some of the areas not being populated enough by enemies, and even then it fixes multiple places in NG2 that forces you to wait and kill one enemy at a time for like 5+ enemies.

The massive damage is at the very least countered by items and Talismans of Rebirth, giving them a better balance so they give breathing room without letting you just heal through encounters. You also don't have to worry about losing out on weapon upgrades and can focus entirely on weighing up item management. Most grabs are predictable and/or reactable too. I replayed NG II and NG2B back to back a few weeks ago, having done every single fight including ToVs and honestly, not having 85% of the game be tedious putrid dogshit felt like a breath of fresh air.
The reworked bow is probably the most underappreciated change ever, whoever misses the UTs is a retard and needs to be stoned to death.
Mech vangelfs, worms and especially dogs are actually fun to fight now due to massively reduced HP pools and much improved encounter design where they get paired with other enemy types.
Red dinos were just bad so they got righfully replaced by black vangelfs as the new tanks.
The imps were a great addition and it's genuinely crazy how Itagaki's team prioritized zombies and horsemen over them.
Giving more hp and delimb resistance to red werewolves makes sense because there was no difference between the basic ones in OG.
Most other enemies retain their high delimb rate.
No jellyfish and water combat.
Staircase has even more enemies now.
Better and improved bosses across the board.
Chapter 11 is straight up better,, not having the cancerous rasetsu fight or the one with like 20 dogs goes a long way.
The final chapters got massively improved thanks to the new and reworked encounters.

The water dragon is much better now due to infinite ammo. You can still hit him with your melee weapons anyway and now there is no risk of stepping out of the platform and not being able to go back. I still find it hard to believe that imps of all fucking enemies are only a Sigma 2/2 Black enemy. NG2 enemy variety is actually horrible even before counting ToVs that just exaggerate it even more due to the sheer number of enemies in them. I think the funniest part though is how they extrapolate the HP increase IS ninjas got, pretend every enemy got a massive HP increase when it's just not true, and then ignore that IS ninjas being upgraded into high tier enemies like that is a big enemy variety bonus overall. I've said it before and I'll continue to say it, the biggest enemy of NG2 are its diehard fans pretending it's something it's not, it can't even be appreciated for it is. With that out of the way, 3RE does massively improve on essence in every single way via Bloody Rage, UTs and SoBs. It maintains every tactical decision while addressing every exploitable issue either by sheer removal or heavy discouragement to make it its own tactical choice.

Beats me. It's just there because the devs knew you'd spend money on them, if I had to guess. Ultimately, it just encourages the player to be incredibly stingy with their money and never even use any of the other options and only stick to what works. Even if something has an specific niche, it'd be a waste to spend money on it compared to something that's better overall. You can kind of see this with how most players claim that Void is the only good Ninpo. It's the most reliable, cost-effective one and thus the only people will actually learn. They won't bother learning what specific niches the other ones have, because again, it'd be a waste of money to do so. This honestly wasn't that much of a problem with how the old upgrade system worked so the fact that they changed it is really silly. You can also see it with how many people never bother to learn anything other than the Sword, for example. It's all just so really flawed.

What a perfect example of everything I said before about shitting on 3RE for things it does well and the other games do far worse. 3RE Karma is a direct incentive to play better with every aspect of it fuelling and rewarding that. Essence is a direct incentive to play as boring and shitty as possible, using one attack that is already your strongest and looping it over and over while ignoring the rest of the combat system and enemy intricacies. Having your main tools constantly reminding you they exist and giving them a cheap unlock price, because it IS cheap even on UN where you have everything halfway through the chapter at most, encourages learning and using them by making acquiring them an opt in action. Similarly because Karma is from playing well, you're encouraged to learn how to make use of your moveset to earn more of it. That includes your base tools before you unlock moves and after each one you do unlock, especially since weapons and Ninpo always cost barely anything to get at first. Not to mention while health upgrades exist, they are not your main healing whatsoever, while the other games force you to split Essence between weapons, ammo and items, so that's even more UT spam. In fact the only one that tried to offset that was Sigma 2, because Essence was only for healing items.

In the first few fights of the very first chapter, yeah. You don't have to spam UTs after that if you don't want to. You get more than enough essence by just playing the game normally and not buying items frequently or at all. ToR chests (if you already have one) will give you enough money to upgrade a weapon to level 3 immediately even if you only have 10k essence, for example. Still, if you want to use that argument, Karma encourages the same thing with SoBs.

Void is only the best when it comes to bosses or if you need an immediate heal i.e. you fucked up and have to change midfight. Inferno is better on multiple fast moving problem targets like claw ninjas and is more consistent especially at range, True Inferno is guaranteed widespread death with full healing making it better if you can build Ki faster, and Wind Blades is better in every other instance, anything it won't kill will almost always delimb and it has more forgiving aiming.

SoB is the mechanic that you cannot spam by design as it's a counter action, doesn't re-enable itself, requires your full moveset to set up while putting you at massive risk both from the enemy itself and every enemy you have to deal with at the same time since you can't do it on demand, all for slightly more Karma than an OT (500 vs 300) which again is made up for by the combo counter you lose if you wait for an SoB, a better multiplier increase while putting you at risk of losing the multiplier entirely because you can't do it on demand like OTs, more Ki which is also made up for by hitting the enemy, and a small amount of health to make up for the fact the game doesn't have items. Best Challenge mode in the series though. Kasumi is just straight pure unadulterated fun to play and I think it has basically every (good) boss in the series as part of the Challenge mode.
