The biggest change is that the tech level is lowered significantly. The Caninu are roughly in the 1860s technologically. Their robots, called steeds, look mechanical on the outside. But internally they're made up biological "muscles" which are dug out of the ground, wrought iron bones, crude oil blood, leather and asbestos veins, and a steam engine heart, pumping oil to fuel the muscles. The pilots, called riders, control these steeds by a series of wires tied around their bodies on all the limbs and fingers, which are connected via rope and pulley to the nerve endings of the muscles. And these steeds are all armed with simple melee weapons and muzzle loading guns.
The country is a post Napoleonic France inspired nation which had its government and army dissolved following dog Napoleon's failed attempt to conquer floating island Europe. Its only armed forces are steed riding mercenaries called lancers and local militias.
The story itself follows a dog girl mercenary who's been hired by a mysterious client to help him explore ancient and deadly ruins in the search for a lost treasure. Unbeknownst to her, her client is possibly the only surviving human, and he's on a mission.
