Yeah, it pretty effectively provides coverage over your body, and standing sideways gives the opponent less area to easily hit.

Yeah. It's called a Philly Shell. It's used in boxing, karate and mma all the time. Not so much in kickboxing. Ryu's side bladed stance makes it more of a karate stance than a boxing stance. Stephen Wonderboy Thompson often has a similar stance with the side bladed feet and lower lead hand. Can be very effective if you're fast.

No. You want at least one foot facing the opponent for max stability. This stance makes it hard to block anything coming from the left. This stance is actually more commonly found in Tae Kwom Do, where evasion is more common than blocking, but seeing as how Ryu is a karate guy, it makes no sense for him to use that stance.

I have a pro card in MT/Boxing/sort of MMA and I would say yes. Unironically frame data is something that "natural fighters" do not understand but would benefit greatly from. GSP famously had a coach that showed this.
