Like I could've just forced myself through it but that would really be missing the entire point of trying to take in the story and setting fully to make a lasting impression on my memory.

Fallout 4: New Vegas is your soonest option. If the FO3 rumors are true, they wouldn't be working on NV yet, unless they were doing something crazy like bundling them.
