It was the other way around. The Master System was released in 1986 with the light phaser. There are like 31 episodes of Zillion (not bad for one season), and a few OVA animated movies. The earliest episodes of Zillion, their 'Zillion blasters' were base don the Sega Light Phaser, and the first run of laser tag guns (The series was ties in to sell laser tag infrared guns, you can see it in the intro) were based on the Light Phaser. Opa-Opa is a character in the Zillion anime. It was a multi media cross over series between Sega and Tatsunoko Productions. The series is on Crunchy Roll.

I mean... it's a pretty obscure franchise all things considering. The anime never aired outside of Japan during it's original run from 1987 to, uh... 1987. Sega did publish both games for the Master System in North America. But the Master System sold like shit compared to the NES. Back then, very it was not common knowledge that it was based on some anime series outside of Japan. Michael Jackson did immortalize the lead character JJ in his and Janet Jackson's Scream music video.

Atari artwork from the 2600 era was in its' own league, really. Pretty sure Atari had one main in-house painter, who was clearly very skilled. Even their Raiders of the Lost Ark artwork is pretty good, despite not having a 1:1 likeness of Harrison Ford.
