Best thing you can do if you are not willing to delid is repaste and keep it free of dust. YLOD comes from the solder balls cracking from heat stress. There is a very long very autistic deep dive in to the YLOD problem.

My 80gb fat ps3 (fully backwards compatible) played like a dream until I tried to s-rank every hard mode mission in AC4A for FRS memory in anticipation for a duel with the one other person IRL I ever met that was into Armored Core. That game pushed the ps3 to the limit (slowdown on lots of missions) and I know for a fact it YLOD'd my cherished system. One day I will reball the CPU.

obviously thermal paste change. it does wonders to both the life of the console and the noise levels.

Three different types of memory cards. The biggest one was mostly for some DSLR cameras, and the other two are for ProDUO (PSP, some Sony devices from that era) and full sized SD Cards.

All of them will YLOD. The 90nm RSX chip is faulty in all of them. You would need to take that chip off and slap on a 40nm to insure that you won't get a YLOD. The Kike, Nip, and Chink engineers dropped the ball with the design. They used a bad underflow fillant with the processor. It couldn't handle the heat and died. It just so happens that the PS3 was slightly better designed cooling wise. Which is why they lasted longer than 360s.

Change thermal paste and the PSU from the ZSSR539IA to the APS-226. More efficient so less heat. Still use my launch console as a video player and occasional ps2 and ps3.

It's the GPU, and it's the die substrate, not the solder balls. The heat has a 50/50 shot of straightening out the chip which is why the reball works sometimes. You'd get the same result from just blasting it with a heat gun. I "revived" many 360's and PC GPUs in that era doing just that. What you really need to hold out for is the mod to swap a PS3 Slim GPU onto the board. It's expensive but worth it for a proper backcompat model.

Otherwise, hand it in to a guy who can do BGA swaps so he can frankenstein a more reliable GPU into it. You're better off selling it if it still works, and getting a PS3 Slim (that can be CFW'd) and a PS2 Phat (so you can mod it with FreeHDBoot and have an OPL library).

While being able to play PS1, PS2, PS3, PSP, and whatever homebrew comes with those platforms all on one console is really neat, it's way too unreliable these days to be a serious option.
