It's probably less that Nia was elected to rule Alrest and more like Rex was the ruler of Alrest. Since Rex, Pyra and Mythra aren't really around anymore in XB3, Nia, being Rex's wife, was chosen to be the ruler of Agnus.
It's not that nonsensical when you look at it that way; If Nia's queen then Rex was king, and given Rex's position at the end of Xenoblade 2 it's far more likely he was the guy in charge.

From where are you getting those twelve years? Also with Klaus's death those two universes weren't linked anymore, xb1 universe was literally linked to Klaus's left side. They probably starter to merge after that.

Some wealthy noble guy had a sick daughter, so he wasted hís fortune on finding a way to heal her. Nia was supposed to be very strong healing blade, but even that wasn't enough. The daughter eventually died and the father forced Nia to eat her remains, thus making her a Flesheater, and act as his daughther until he died.

There is some sidequests about a lost urayan royal line that was living in gormoth. Nia's noble family is kinda implied to be this one. Even if Nia is some weird cannibal princess that has DNA from a real dead one that still only makes her related to urya. There are so many royalties in Alrest. A royal line being born from a hero makes more sense but then that would be Rex not Nia.

It doesn't make much sense for Agnus to have a single ruler in the same way that Keves does, considering the state the worlds were in. You'd only expect something like that out of a political marriage between Mor Ardain and Uraya.

Incidentally, there's an unresolved sidequest plot in 2 where it's made clear that the rightful ruler of Uraya is probably Gormotti. And Nia's human half happens to be from a noble family. And Nia seemed to get along pretty well with Niall, who she revealed her true form to before any other human. But don't tell the Niafags any of that. They don't like it for some reason.

Eh, either that or Melia's running the show in both worlds and they made Nia the de jure queen because she's the de facto queen's pen pal.

Nia is also the adoptive daughter of a Gormotti lord, one of the hero that saved the world, and one of the most powerful being left in Alrest after Amalthus did his attack on the World Tree. She was probably chosen as the new ruler of a self governing Gormotti state in a world where Mor Ardain doesn't need Gormott's ressource because they are literally falling appart. Her being the "Queen" of the Agnus side is just because she has admin rights to Origin (mostly because Tora made her half of the machine). She isn't the Queen of the whole world outside of Aionios. In contrast, Melia probably ended up as the ruler of the entirety of the XC1 civilisations because we see that they all have pretty much merged by the time Melia is crowned empress.
