A large world for a solo player is extremely tedious. I suggest Medium.

Classic Medium Corruption on Normal Difficulty is the best way to start the game. Once you get a grasp of things, check out the other options.

There is nothing wrong with a brand new player starting on Classic to get familiar with how the game works. Classic still has plenty of challenge if you're playing it straight and not cheesing everything.

I like medium. Large worlds take unnecessarily longer to do things.

With small worlds you run into problems of items just not being on the map because they didn't generate. Verified that with an external program one time. So I took my character to another world and got what I needed from a chest.

I know the games been out for 10+ years, but if you're unironically new going to expert immediately is retarded. A player who doesn't know all the little tricks, meta weapons, and ways to optimize their stats and arenas is going to get completely curb stomped in expert.

Is this why people say terraria is a wiki game? Because 4chan retards are too proud to just play the game organically, and swap to expert mode when they're actually an expert, and not just because their ego doesn't allow them to play normally?

If you're brand new and know nothing start on normal difficulty, medium sized world. Then do a replay on expert difficulty with a large sized world. Expert is basically the "normal" difficulty, with normal genuinely being too easy, but you'll enjoy expert a lot more if you've played the game on normal once. Terraria is a game you play tons of times anyway, and expert actually changes things in a neat way. If your first playthrough is on expert you'll miss out on some cool moments.

Medium or large world. Small worlds are tiny and can have horrible generation like a nano-scale jungle. Expert mode (classic is a kiddie mode, master mode is difficult unless you're an experienced player). Corruption and Crimson are both great, I prefer Crimson for items but Corruption has an undeniably better soundtrack and is slightly less difficult.

There's no shame in bumping back down to Expert if you don't want to go all the way to Classic. But if you really are going to stick with it, then I highly recommend fishing for crates, especially oasis crates. Get a reinforced fishing pole and find a desert oasis to fish in - there's always shitloads of dragonflies to catch, so you can keep yourself stocked up on bait. A
Don't forget to fish during a blood moon too - you can set up a "fishing cage" that will keep you safe while you chip a caught enemy to death so you can get a decent ranged weapon for bosses.

Don't. It simply isn't really a good game at all.
I have about 100 hours on it blindly, no guides.
I played it that much because I'm autist and was curious, not because I was entertained or having fun.
Without elaborating too much, it's just never ending grinding. Bad exploration. Shitty NPCs. Awful combat. Okayish soundtrack.

If no NPCs are coming even though the house is suitable, you most likely have all the NPCs you have available to you right now, every NPC has different requirements, but they are fairly intuitive.
