Just like with the Wii, I think a lot of that can be attributed to the lack of rebindable controls.
Devs after 5th gen also put less time into making the base control scheme and character controls fun to play and were actively trying to cut corners or backport PC games to fit on more limited control schemes. Sega exiting the console market in 6th gen was normal and the remaining competitors either got lucky and were stupid (Sony), had greater brand presence and were autistic about their properties (Nintendo) or were malicious and had capital (Microsoft).
