Very senior corporate types aren't supposed to be micro managing and making detailed decisions so what they need is an overall understanding of how very large companies operate. This is why they can jump between corporations that do wildly different things. This has been normal for ages.

The problem is that you get leadership that does micro manage and refuse to delegate decision-making to the subject matter experts.
Or alternatively complete mercenaries that don't give a shit about running the company well long term since they know they'll get a new job in six months and just need to cut costs for the next quarter even if that means burning down the company

That's precisely how they don't behave like a business. Late stage capitalism is hiring CEOs who have destroyed every company they've ever led, who inherited power without ever working a lower-tier job, because of their track record of leading many big companies. Business is thinking of short term profits above all else, having no plan except nonsensical infinite growth faster than the global population increase, spending billions on a meme some shyster sold you because his presentation had big words, and insulting your customers when they don't like your product.

Nintendo has just barely begun acting like a business in the latter half of the Switch's lifespan, as everyone with a soul has begun to die off or leave the company.
