it's the last YGO deck I tried making. I love the carnivorous plants archetype first and foremost and I love vore so of course I want to be lured, killed and eaten by a cute girl, especially if she were a giant man-eating flowerplant hybrid, like large enough that I wander into her gaping mouth, lured by the scent of her sweet breath before her jaws snap shut and she pulverizes and thrashes my body with her tongue before positioning me onto the bed of her teeth and chews me into a fine red paste and my remains mix with the plaque on her gumline and enters her bloodstream

I mainly stopped playing YGO because I couldn't read the essay long card effects anymore so when an opponent would offer to pass me their card when they used an effect I would just kind of take their word for whatever it did because I couldn't read that shit but before stopping playing YGO entirely I mainly used Six Samurai and Agents decks which were fun and effective and I memorized their effects and stuff. I had my eyes on Ghostricks and Madolche because the pun names entertained me, no idea if they were any good or not.

Madolche Tiramisu's ability was annoying as fuck. I didn't play competitive but a friend mained that deck and that card was always trouble for me.

On the note of giant plant girls, I distinctly remember Monsters getting bigger when their ATK increased on the show. I remember the Harpy Girls growing slightly when they got some boost but when I went back and watched the show recently it never happened. I know I wouldn't get a false memory because it's such a specific thing and it was a powerful and clear memory, not some hazy thought. Might be a question for /a/ or something

It used to be when the power gap was that big, you could use board breakers and floodgates to even the odds going first or second.
But no floodgate or breaker hits both Ryzeal and Maliss without hurting you, and also isn't banned (Summon Limit would). I guess there is Summon Breaker, Deck Lockdown.

Yeah that basically killed playing YGO with friends. Lot of us are using old decks and cards from childhood or using single archetypes for fun and the one who kept begging us to play uses tourney decks and often OTK's or has 5 minute long turns where he kills you or uses decks with inescapable locks.

The best fun was just buying random starter or structure decks and playing as-is. Some like the Dino deck were strong out of the box but most were wonky without staple cards.

That's the problem with card game players, they get used to the speed of the game and when the inevitable power creep happens, and it always does due to the nature of card games and marketing, they quit because they can't adapt to newer gameplay, and then get nostalgia mad at card game maker for daring to try to make money off of their game using one of the only viable strategies that historically works for card games.

YGO could evolve in a way that doesn't require power creep so hard. Mimighoul was a step in the right direction even if the design was dogshit. But Konami refuses and just keeps playing more resilient midrange or stronger combo decks and engines.

I think it falls down to "easiest money making mechanics" when we discuss value for cards vs their power scaling. You're right in that Konami could print less powerful cards that are fun like Mimighoul. However, there's already been precedence in the game for what genuine tier 0 looks like, and konami needs to match that power or better in order to continue selling cards because consumers are noooticers, they'll notice the game slowing down and become extremely vocal minorities and lower game value.
To avoid that and also make money, just make really strong cards that outpace the previous meta in order to discourage you from buying previous set and buying new set because its gonna be what people play in tournaments, which is where they make money by not offering winners any amount of money in return for their investment.
tl;dr konami makes awful decisions and ruin the games speed in favor of money

The game has always been unbalanced, but it was fun when you could at least side specific answers against a deck to help you win going 1st or 2nd. Think HERO main deck droplet and duster/heavy.
Now generics aren't enough. Your engine needs to be as or more powerful/resilient/recursive than your opponent's which is what kills interest in the game, forcing players to play decks they don't like when they already are running cards they don't want to.
I think its hilarious how incompetent Konami is, they made Horus to be a generic engine within a non-functional deck, then accidentally power creeped it with Millenniums which were supposed to only be used within the Exodia deck.

I stopped YGO because Links broke my decks' legs and I wouldn't waste money with such a blatant sellout rule.
I did come back after they dialed back the rule so it only applied to Links and Extra Deck Pendulums, but when I returned the game was a cancerous control mess where everyone played like Ritual Beasts. It was nuts.
I do have interest in either building Labrynth or a Silent Magician deck. Do either work?

Every deck nowadays requires a one-card combo to compete with Tier 3 decks at this point, it's now a matter of how much searching power and extension potential an archetype can have for it to be considered "good enough". Remember how people thought that Tearlaments wouldn't be as good, and then Ishizu came right after? Or how Yubel went from a shitty outdated anime archetype to an instant Tier 1 with its modern support? A deck only needs the right support to go from mediocre to busted.

Basically what you said, searches and tutors and the like, and power that comes from niche old cards that didn't do anything until other cards helped them become problems are released. Think Diablosis and how it wasn't extremely common until Kashtira a turbo rank 7 engine that doubles as face down banishing for Diablosis' effect, it became way too strong out way too quickly and was subsequently banned.
The state of the games speed revolves around bending the rules of the game fundamentally, which has always been a thing, but more recently konami is playing with things like recycling and resummoning from banishment. Which as it sounds is pretty nutty, and the more they experiment with bending the rules the more actions can happen, or players will autistically discover niche or otherwise hyper beneficial, layered responses that turn negatives into positives

Just started dabbling in the game. Is there a reason I haven't heard of this card when people bring up hand traps? Is it bad because it doesn't negate? It's still a bit hard for me to understand how some of these effects resolve.

It would have been good enough through 2024 but probably not enough now. What the extr LP effectively does is buy you another turn to draw a card. But the "innovation" of infinite recycling engines like Fiendsmith, Primite and the ease of summoning FTK bosses like Cosmic Blazar means that decks running this engines inherently win the grind once they've set up. To say nothing of Tenpai being stupid degenerate abusing cards like Ancient Leaf.
In paper OCG it's probably legit, but in paper TCG it's degen with how their time rules work.

Ogre is a good card but not very consistent. Veiler and Imperm are fairly consistent because most decks initiate search effects on the field, during the main phase, meaning even if you leave a body you turn an effect monster into a normal monster.
Ogre is good against specific cards that need to be face up to resolve (like Apollousa, Gigantic Spright, Ryzeal Duodrive, Naturia Beast) She can also slay continuous spells, field spells and traps and can do it from the field if summoned there directly like via E-Tele.
The downside is most newer Konami decks do stupid shit like search on summon with a lot of passive continuous effects. Ogre does nothing against the Maliss field spell, for example, or the Ryzeal one because it has built-in negation. Same reason why Thunder Dragon Colossus is kind of shit now, a lot of decks set from the deck or dump to the GY first before adding to hand, if not special from deck directly.

Hand traps have been staples since 2009. Veiler was run at x3 in every deck, for over 10 years since it was legal. Droll, Crow and Maxx were format defendant up through Spellbook-Dragon Rulers, took a break during HAT and came back full force for DUEA and never went away.

Bystial Centurion, I got to DLvMAX yesterday after a duel where my opponent was Kaiju'ing my Synchros and a mirror match where my opponent scooped for no reason in the middle of his turn. I'm so done with the event, and even with all of its cards limited, I kept getting matched against Tenpai players who somehow would manage to pull out all of their cards and OTK me. I think it just beat Runick as one of my top 3 most hated decks in the game.

The only way would be to use Transcendent to put her into attack and then crash, but you can just Blazar negate its summon to begin with.

Ghost Ogre in particular was seen a lot in the Pendulum era when decks were diversified and there were a lot of continuous cards around. Konami seems to hate Ogre so its printing a lot of shit that flat out ignore it. Newer spells search on activation (Maliss, Tear) or resolution (Lordly Lode). The ones that do activate like Centurion, Shining Sarc or Ryzeal have built-in protection from Ogre.
The only new spells/traps that fold to ogre are the nonmeta ones like the Mimighoul field spell. There's also King's Sarc but Ogre on that is so easy to punish with 3 other cards that become King's Sarc, and 3 of the horus monsters able to punish an ogre activation.
Ogre is pretty good against Synchro Monster , you kill either the tuner or the non-tuner and it messes up their play without an extender.

Lunalight is currently meta on paper. And the upcoming pend flip deck will be pure cancer since it lacks HOPT on all their non spell effects. Also because it only special summons once and never normal summons so most fuwas do next to nothing and they main deck 3 Ra speares.
