I've been trying to work on backward compatibility for my games (I don't believe some small 2D sprite game should be limited by software) and holy fucking shit, the amount of time a dependency is OS locked for no reason (they're not using the features from the newer OS) is astonishingly common.
Microsoft "muh security" retardation really did a number on people.

IIRC microsoft loves to force newest windows as default in visual studio, even if it's not required, so the developer has to be aware of it jump through hoops to target earlier windows. In XP to 7 migration days, I remember all it took to make some games locked to 7 to run on XP was hex editing the minimal required system version in .exe header, it worked flawlessly afterwards.

You don't need VMs to play games, just use Proton. If you can't run it through Proton or some other emulator, then a VM won't work anyways.
