This was 15 years ago and I've been playing just single player games ever since. She's the reason why I even like RTS games in the first place since she used to write down guides for them as well and we'd play in a LAN together.

What's crazy is that I'm married, have kids, a normal job, hang out with extended family, and I can still find time to game in the evenings just fine. But I have friends who act like it's just impossible. I think in reality people just stop caring about having friends as much when they age. Or at least they feel less of a need to spend time with friends often. My bros and I will game maybe a couple hours every 2 or 3 months tops.

The boyfriend isn't wrong, but the issue always comes when people try to talk about things that aren't "wastes of time". I guarantee you that whatever the boyfriend convinced that anon's sister to do instead of playing video games is just as much of a waste of time as her hobby already was.

You play them because you want to have fun. Some people watch TV, some people scroll social media, others play video games. Nobody is productive all the time, but obviously when it is cutting into shit you gotta do then you can't be doing it. But when you are done with your shit and just wanna chill then it's fine.

Luckily (?) all my friends are on the 'puter and they're all autistic nerdy shut-ins like me. Been gaming with the bros since I was 12, am now 32, and over that whole period of time only 1.5 members of the group dropped out (The .5 still shows up sometimes but doesn't really game anymore)
