After a bit of googling, I tried 7th Heaven and it can't launch without first launching the base game once.
Any other mods that supposedly fix this issue?

Did a little more digging and the 7th Heaven mod indeed used to just let you launch the game without having to launch the online only vanilla game once. The newer versions for some reason require it.
Downloading older version of the mod and seeing if I can just use that to play.

Alright I managed to get it working by installing an older version of 7th Heaven. Version 3.5.1.0 seems to work just fine.

Do all your 7th Heaven setup.
Go through Game Launcher, Game Driver, and Game Settings in the 7th Heaven manager. Check for updates in the "General Settings" as well.
Once you've done all that, launching even from Steam should bypass the Square-Enix launcher

It has worse sound quality compared to PS1 and they added those disgusting mouths on the chibi models.
Just emulate the original and use a crt shader. I like newpixie crt without curvature.
I shouldn't have to download 10+ GB mods just to make a PS1 game playable.

Just use DuckStation. The PC port doesn't add anything to the game beyond mod support that you can't also do in an emulator (cheating, fast-forwarding, etc.)

Retroarch filters are more user friendly and you have more options there are like 100+ of them by default, it's been a while since I used the reshade filters but I believe retroarch has more advanced ones that also consume more resources. And if you are willing to dig into the settings you can customize the shit out of them, you can make your game look like bad composite on a shitty Wallmart TV with bad geometry and all if you want, or you can make your picture look like premium, you need a 4k display for that though. By comparison Reshade is pretty limited and mostly good for older PC games that look like shit blown out to modern resolutions.

That's kinda what I imagined, but I'm a bit inept when it comes to setting retro shaders so I thought it was more a skill issue on my part.
Still, I don't like Retroarch though.

What UI are you using? The default UI sucks, imo the XMB is the best, try the different ones and it will drastically change your experience. I have been emulating for a long time and I think retroarch is the best thing that happened to emulation, all your games in a single place, tons of settings, the core system is genius, the way everything is handled is streamlined and smartly designed. And it works on everything, I am running it on Switch too and it's nice to have a unified platform for playing older games.

Honestly, it's just a matter or preference and nothing more. I prefer having separate specific emulators that I can fnagle with myself, rather than a centralized frontend for emulator cores. That doesn't mean Retroarch is bad, in fact I agree with you, it seems like a great program with plenty of smart decisions behind it. I just don't want to use it. I may eventually give a try because of the shaders though.
