What exactly does secure boot even do and why is it so controversial for gamers to turn it on? Is there any real downsides to it being on?
Plus I know it doesn't stop 100% of cheats but if it stops even a little bit of them, doesn't that justify having it enabled? I mean what do you have to lose from turning it on exactly?

Secure boot checks the pieces of software (bootloader, OS kernel, drivers etc) that load at start up against a database of trusted signatures. If any of them have been messed with (potentially maliciously) it prevents the system from loading.
>Is there any real downsides to it being on?
I'm pretty sure all new (i.e. last decade) PCs have had it on by default. Most people never have to interact with it. The only issue is that some people are running installs on older system that use legacy BIOS, whereas secure boot is a UEFI standard. This can cause Windows (if using MBR partitioning) to fail to boot if they turn it on as it disables legacy support. Windows has a utility called mbr2gpt.exe that can resolve this.

Secure boot is required by Microsoft to be enabled before you can address the TPM. The TPM is typically for storing cryptographic keys but in this instance is used to identify what hardware is used to cheat with. Should the cheater be banned, not only will the game and/or account have to replaced but also the motherboard and/or CPU depending on which manufacturer you have. It is not possible to get around this hardware ban as each TPM is signed by the manufacturer's EKCert private keys with only the public key being exposed when addressed. The only possible way around this could be to install a discrete TPM module instead which are relatively inexpensive and are compliant. Should cheaters massively go this route however, it would be possible to lock out these modules as they would be signed by other manufacturers (i.e. Infineon instead of Intel or AMD).

Secureboot doesn't prevent any kind of third party kernel drivers from loading, including of course malicious kernel drivers. It's a band-aid which solves no problem we can think off. It has almost always been the case that malicious kernel level code was implemented in term of drivers. The security expert consensus seems to be that it solves more or less nothing at all.

>>717987402
The real reason is that it makes installing other OS than Windows more difficult, and dual boot more difficult also. It's to make installing something else than Windows more difficult - and because only Microsoft have the primary keys, all OS must now be accredited by Microsoft. Which is the real sticker.

You literally can't install a Linux that hasn't been accredited by Microsoft if you have Secureboot. Thankfully, __for now__, it seems that Microsoft gives accreditation liberally. For now. At the moment. In the present. In this instant.

And of course locking the latest Windows behind Secureboot is to force everyone to adopt it. Once everyone has Secureboot on... well. Well.

secure boot stops a certain class of cheat, mainly ones that run "below" the OS and read other players positions from ram and whatnot.
these are undetectable by conventional anticheat, secureboot prevents them from being able to run at boot.

however, someone can easily whip up hax at application level to work during the beta, but it'll get banned in a week once anticheat knows what to look for.

Secure Boot is not an Anticheat. It's a feature of the Operating System, even Linux can enable Secure Boot without problems as it's part of it.

Secure Boot is the only component that can talk to the TPM in your motherboard , this TPM has a hardware key that cannot be changed or tampered with, this links all hardware components wiith encrypted keys to it.

The idea is to identify cheaters in the game and then ban the cheater by banning his user account and their TPM key from accessing the game servers.

The only way to bypass this ban is by buying a new computer and creating a new user account.
There are some more advanced tools to change the TPM key but this requires a BIOS flash with a custom firmware, then buying a new TPM module to replace the old one and reinstall the OS everytime you get banned, so most people won't bother with this and it is time consuming.

Secure Boot isn't an Anti-cheat. It's a setting that prevents anything from executing before the OS, such as malware or cheat software to prevent them from hiding from the OS/Anti-malware or anti-cheat software.

Secure Boot is a good thing, the problem is it creates a transition issue for a number of users who are still using MBR partitions instead of GPT on their boot drives and can't switch to UEFI to enable SB. Btw, you need GPT for any drive over 2TB and in 2025 that's extremely common. Sooner or later people will need to make the switch, if not Battlefield, it'll be something else.

As some other anons have pointed out, it's just DRM for your OS and hardware that Microsoft most likely holds all the keys for, it just checks your hardware configuration and then ties that to your TPM "key" so that your PC can be identified by anyone who checks it, it then goes through a whitelist of "known goodboy software" during OS boot and if any "badboys" are found among them it either terminates the boot thanks to a kernel panic or it simply skips loading the "bad" software.

You can technically make your own DRM using it but if your using your own "version" of it then MS and it's partners can just block you from accessing their stuff and worst case scenario is that, since they were a major pillar during its design phase, they most likely have the master key to it, so MS can just brick it or change it without warning.

It is also a part of the "replacement" for the old BIOS standards known as UEFI (Which MS is also a MASSIVE contributor towards), which, surprise surprise, has been known to be "bugged" when used by Microsofts bootloader in such a way that it used to randomly brick GRUB if you were dual-booting Linux, it just happened to be fixed by Microsoft in an update recently but it took them about a fucking decade to fix the "issue".

I think a lot of comments in this thread are missing the bigger picture here. Secure Boot in-and-of-itself is not a major problem and is arguably a boon for security (albeit an overrated one that comes with some risks). The real problems come from what it enables:

Measured Boot -> Secure Boot -> Remote Attestation
Measured Boot: The TPM records each component of the boot chain.
Secure Boot: Same as measured boot but the TPM also enforces signatures on each component.
Remote Attestation: The TPM can prove to a remote third-party (e.g. a multiplayer or license server) that your computer is operating in a specific configuration.

It's remote attestation that is the real problem. With that, companies can start demanding that you run only a very locked down OS in order to use their software or service, with the OS itself providing DRM or intrusive monitoring. You can see a version of this on mobile devices today.
Ask yourself this: if secure boot provides such minimal benefits to EA, why are they insisting on it, even knowing that it will cost them some single-digit percentage of customers? The only answer I can come up with is that they're willing to take the hit in order to help construct the infrastructure of digital control.

its sad. most zoomies dont know what a bios actually is. hell, many of them dont understand basic file structures or how to even find shit if its not saved to their desktop.

I will never enable secureboot because idgaf and it shouldnt be required, even if i have tpm 2.0 compatible hardware. ill spend hours in my bios finetuning every voltage and performance curve though.

The biggest reason though is that zoomers are particularly bad about doing anything on their own in fear of breaking it. Theres no curiosity and no desire to experiment. They are so averse to making any sort of mistake they'd just rather not do anything. They think if they go into their BIOS they can break their computer. Honestly as long as you're not touching voltages you cant even break anything in bios that a CMOS clear wont fix. Doesnt matter to them though. Could break it, wont risk it.

Nobody is "forced" to use it shit for brains. You can still use your PC without it. Currently there are barely any contemporary programs that require it, BF6 is the first large time the concept of SB has infiltrated the normie-sphere. yes, voltages - the one thing that is common sense to anyone with half a brain to the point where old bioses even had warning saying do not touch this one specific setting if you dont know what you're doing. Modern ones will hit you with multiple warning messages on the voltage related settings saying - hey if you dont know what you're doing you can actually fuck something up here, are you sure you want to make a change? Not to mention the voltage settings are usually burried somewhere that you actually have to look for them.

Literally every other setting it just lets you do whatever because its impossible to fuck up your system from bios.

Once again youre just exposing the fact you're a retarded zoomer who doesnt know shit about computers and is scared of them. >SecureBoot
Literally only relevant for insurance purposes in buisness ventures. It has no value to consooomer whatsoever -- if you catch yourself bootkit as consooomer, you have bigger problems than the bootkit itself.

If a rootkit kernel-level "anticheat" requires SecureBoot, it's a massive red flag, because the "anticheat" itself can be then used to circumvent SecureBoot. To expect consooomers to enable a hardware feature that has the potential to brick a system is bad, to expect consooomers to enable a hardware feature that has the potential to brick a system to facilitate a corporate rootkit is just ridiculous.

The entire "anticheat" topic has been solved decades ago with community run servers and community curated ban lists. I'd take getting banned by a butthurt badmin over installing corporate rootkits and enabling hardware "security" features that at best are completely unnecessary and at worst make me more dependant on corporate (e.g.: soon-to-be-expired certificates).

>installing an additional lock (= SecureBoot) to your ignition that's indepedant from your original set of car keys
>in order to install a proprietary, intransparent corporate blackbox (= the rookit "anticheat") ontop of that lock
Why should that "anticheat" require or even interact with SecureBoot? It's completely self-defeating. The very moment your PC successfully boots up, there's no benefit to SecureBoot in regards to "anticheat" measures, unless the "anitcheat" is actively messing with its funcitionality. In which case whoever created that "anticheat" can brick your system if they push faulty code.
