I remember watching my dad play this. What's the best version of this to play today? I know crowbcat's video didn't really shine a positive light on the remake, but now I'm just learning of a HD mod of the original. So which is really the best version of RE4?

HD project mod on RE4 PC is the best by far, it's an incredibly faithful and well made mod. They literally went across spain and sourced a lot of the original IRL places for better textures

RE4 (2023) is by far the best way to play he game.
Best feeling guns, better environment layouts, enemies actually present somewhat of a challenge, knife isn't just a "shoot the knees, kick , and slice a grounded enemy while his friends watch"

By far my favorite version of the game and it's not close.
Playing it in VR is also fucking great.

I've spent hundreds of hours playing the original on GC and on Wii. Wii Motion control aiming was pretty fun, but is worthless when compared to how good it feels to play the game in VR.
QTEs on the original were also annoying.


Most of the "OG IS BETTER" """"discourse"""" I see is all from people who played the game for the first time on the 2nd Steam release.

Enemies in the original will run to you and stand in a group taking turns to compensate for how slow the controls were.

listen, kid. you can play either one of them, ok? you have my permission. I say you should play them both, even, so you can see the differences and make up your mind for yourself which one you like more. personally, I still think the original is better - it has more personality, and the controls are a lot more responsive. however the remake isn't terrible, mostly because it's still mostly RE4, but that doesn't mean it doesn't have its flaws. sure, it has more graphical fidelity than the first game, but something was lost in translation, and I don't think the new game mechanics make up for it, or make it a much better experience in the end.

The OK way:

The Steam version works fine although it's pretty unoptimized for slower PCs. Some of the textures look kind of rough in higher resolutions also. If you have the option to play the gamecube version I'd suggest that, but otherwise the PC port is fine. It's the way I first played it and RE4 is one of my favorite games of all time.


Also this is just personal opinion, but something felt "off" about the switch version, and I don't just mean input lag. I can't put my finger on it. Either way, maybe avoid that port.

Emulate the gamecube version. Its the real version without any of the weird changes that were made to the PC version and PS2 version in terms of balance. Gamecube is still the definitive version.

Anyways the PS2 and PC versions have weird changes when it comes to how often the RNG grants you ammo and has less enemies placed in the world overall making it easier than the gamecube version.

Remake throws everything that made the original fun and unique out the window, it's indistinguishable from any other 3rd person OTT game made in the last 15 years, and the tone of the game and writing is ashamed of being fun.
