Considering that Mario Party, despite the name, isn't very easy to drop in and drop out of for parties like Mario Kart or Smash Bros., it has an odd niche. It's multiplayer-oriented but it's also a commitment for maybe around an hour of play at a time. Some of the entries are so derivative of each other that getting more than 1 or 2 per console is also a hard sell. There's those possibilities for it lagging behind, and there's also people swearing off it because it just ruined a friendship or two.
