A fear that makes sense on a surface level but quickly craters once you realize how much trouble companies would be if they just didn't allow you to access what could be hundreds or thousands of dollars of content you purchased.
To date, the only real problem consoles for digital were Wii, Wii U and 3DS because Wii stuff was associated with console, while the other two are account based they aren't compatible in the switch ecosystem so may as well be the same case as Wii.
This fear holds no water for PlayStation or Xbox.
I think the real culprit is hoarding mentality, and people who suffer from this use preservation as an excuse.
