Brutal John 2 came out in early access. It's not awful but it feels like that weird late 00s/early 2010s shooter before Shadow Warrior 2013 and Wolfenstein New Order kicked off the FPS renaissance. Shit like Bulletstorm, Eat Lead, Duke Nukem Forever that thought that "Old school FPS" just meant swearing a lot and excessive violence, and not the actual game design.
Brutal John is not awful like DNF, certainly better and more functional than Phantom Fury, and crypto miner aliens is a funny enough antagonist. The actual combat feels okay but it feels more like it's putting more effort into presentation and attempts at making a joke.
Last Exterminator feels more promising, I don't know if maybe it's related to the main character being a down-on-her-luck blue collar worker rather than directly trying to ape Duke/Serious Sam that's doing wonders for the atmosphere but then again there haven't been any updates in over a year.
