MGS2 has the coolest vibe
It absolutely nails this unique, I dunno, utilitarian atmosphere. Big Shell has this effortless industrial charm to it, the kind you canβt quite put into words. They probably didn't even think about it, but there's a particular allure in that industrial aesthetic: the exposed beams, steel frameworks, weathered surfaces, the vast expanses between them. The muted grey-blue and rusty orange tones give everything a sense of melancholy. The whole place feels very grand and quiet as you're running up above the world, surrounded by wind, open skies, and the hum of machinery. The great soundscape amplifies the feeling of solitude, too.
So basically I really like it, it's been 75 years and nothing else has quite captured this vibe again for me.

IHaveHadIt
Today our 23 y/o son woke us up,giggling hysterically, having flushed two action figures down the toilet. About 30 minutes later when he needed to poop (having removed all of his clothes to do so), he discovered the toilet was clogged (because of course it was). He became completely unglued, hitting my husband as he tried to fix the toilet, trying to break everything in sight, running around and just raging. All while completely naked. All 250 lbs, 6' of him. The only reason our son isn't beating the shit out of us and tearing the place apart is because he is sleeping.
He's broken our living room window twice. There are holes in most walls (and a few ceilings)--it looks like someone took a sledgehammer to the place. He is so much worse than he was as a child. Things have gotten progressively more and more out of control since he went into puberty and they've never got better. Our 100+ lbs Akita hides whenever my son gets upset. The cat disappears for hours. He's never hurt them--in fact, he adores them both--but he's so out of control that he becomes terrifying. He's hurt his father. He's hurt me. We've had to call the police
A few days ago I found a lump. I was diagnosed with cancer back in fall of 2015 and spent a full year dealing with treatment, surgeries, and infections. And yet, my first thought when I felt that lump was, "This is my ticket out." I actually felt...relief. The world is fucked up. Our country is fucked up (I live in the US). My family is fucked up. I feel like maybe a door has been opened. Maybe the state would stop fucking around and place my son if I were gone, because my husband can't just quit his job and care for him. Maybe they would stop making unhelpful, one-size-fits-all suggestions that my son's psychiatrist agrees are of no use. We have been doing this for over two decades, just my husband and I with zero family support and that includes when I had cancer. I will be 60 this year and I am so tired.

Big shell is a visually boring environment for the most part. Two orange hexagons and a bunch of gray hallways. The last hour of the game is the only actual good part. Shadow Moses was a lot more interesting

There is a certain harmony I find very appealing.

It's why it's my favorite MGS game. Just knowing we're off the coast of NYC adds to the vibe, including the seagull synths... I just can't describe it in any other way than pure kino

I think the music makes a lot of the atmosphere too. Genuinely the most unique and immersive of the series imo

the game's environment models are extremely geometrical and simple but it has god tier texture work and lighting so it makes it feel sublime. You don't see that shit nowadays because Kojima and other good directors poached all the talent and the game industry has no teachers

I'm playing it right now. Last time I played it was in like 2014. Weird fucking game.
Raide comes from nowhere. We don't even know who equips him and sends him in.
Everyone treats him like he's retarded or a nuisance at best.
It's never made clear if the real Rose was ever involved. Or even if the Coronel AI was a thing outside her head.
The Arsenal Gear part might as well be a virtual simulation.

Clearly you've never actually been in an industrial environment. The environments in MGS2 are immaculately clean, and everything looks like it's made of plastic. It looks about as generic as it gets.

There is just something off about MGS2's blocky environments that feel fake, which may be intentional, but its still an uncanny valley feeling that makes me dislike it.

Out of the entire series this game plays and feels best to play. TPP comes close but only due to its modernized control scheme.
This game really is fucking smooth.

I agree. I first played MGS2 around 2018 and was really struck by the aesthetic too.

not sure about that, Yoji Shinkawa's designs often have this feeling, the VR mech game has it too

Only on original PS2 hardware, otherwise all the unique and cool visual effects Kojima used throughout the game and every cutscene are either missing or broken.
Ex: this heat haze effect is applied incorrectly to the HD release, so that it only affects the subtitles...

I like how snappy and arcade-like MGS2 feels. Once it's your second playthrough onwards and you aren't watching all the cutscenes, it's a really fun game to blast through, from start to finish. 1 is similar feeling, but it focuses on bosses a lot more, and has far less refined gunplay. 3 by comparison is a lot more slow paced and has you in menus changing camo and your loadout more often, and some of the mechanics get in the way of the gameplay's flow. I wish the series evolved 2's mechanics further.

I can still hear your image even though I haven't played MGS2 in nearly 20 years.
