>Literally the entire premise of the franchise is that there's a shadowy global conspiracy that controls the entire world, and they have written every history book and controlled and changed history and every single thing that everyone knows about everything is completely wrong, and humanity originated as slaves but Adam and Eve led a rebellion against ancient monsters...
And yet midwits will still complain that it's "historically inaccurate"...
What's next? Complaining the Matrix is historically inaccurate?

>cool assassin game gets announced in 2006
>people get excited over it
>he shots crossbow in the trailer
>later on they remove crossbow from game because it's "historically inaccurate"
gee I wonder why people think like this about the game hmmmmm

If I remember rightly, there was absolutely no marketing re the whole eternal war between Templars and Assassins, or that you weren't actually playing as Altair.
It was marketed as "Prince Of Persia but free roam".
So it stands to reason why they'd change this attitude from prior to release.

By your logic, Abstergo would have scrubbed all reference to Yasuke from history, since he dabbed on some Templars

This.
It was marketed as a purely historical game.
Was totally blindsided the first time I played it and you're suddenly told it's actually set 5 years in the future in 2012!

there's a difference between playing an OC that gets this super alternate history infiltration thing of fighting underground conspiracies for generations on end, and then suddenly playing a historical individual who runs around in full samurai armor garb outside of the specific battlefield scenarios it was explicitly made for going on killing sprees in broad daylight.
it's also a big problem when doing this sort of thing ends up literally using historical consultants who proclaim this is all fair and legitimate to do with none of the actual pedigree or logic to justify any of it going through. and even worse because by the Animus logic of the franchise itself, actually PLAYING as Yasuke has no canonical sense or justification versus Naoe, it just happens, effectively breaking even the series rules.

there's a suspension of disbelief, and apparently a number of people weren't willing to take it because it stretched itself too thin.

Yeah LotR is pure fantasy whereas historic settings in AssC were meant to be 1 to 1 recreations from memory.
>but they featured weird gods
Yeah in secret little rooms, that doesn't contradict IRL history.

Of course later on they completely abandoned that idea and switched from memories to simulations and at that point historic accuracy was out the window

The whole point of it is that IRL history is bullshit within their fictional setting.

The only thing that's fictional in that setting is the going into ancestors machine.

Not really in the same sense people keep parroting. It's like bitching at political thrillers that use real events and people as a basis, a story throwing some "unseen truths" or "classified intel" behind the scenes that you know is fictional. The alien precursor bullshit went off the rails, but Templars vs. Assassins was like taking history and adding a fictional edge on top, but events still had to line up with reality. By the time of Origins, though, when they started dealing with time periods we just don't have enough information on to actually form societal ideas and a basis around, the devs literally just have the characters in-universe go, "Yeah uh, we don't actually HAVE the full information on this stuff so a lot of it is made up to fill in the blanks hence mythological monster bosses and the politically correct changes."

At that point the series just became a theme park ride.

The sci-fi elements of Assassin’s Creed were always so fucking gay. Why can’t it just be a historical game?

No it isn't?
The guy going in to the machine says to the professor "Some things seem wrong? Different to history" and the professor explains that all history is bullshit.

Thats was the intended surprise. You think you get a history game, but you get a game in a game.

I don't agree with it, but that not knowing it was an animus sim was deliberately

That's exactly how it is irl. Phantom centuries, Tartaria, Great Mud Flood, you know, stuff like that.

Do you play a descendant of Naoe in Shadows then?
