Rdr2 will be a game that deserves to be played for a long, long time.

I just finished RDR1 after buying it and RDR2 on sale on my PS5.
I played RDR1 back when it originally came out (I'm in my late 30s) and never played RDR2.

So far, I'm only about 5 hours into RDR2 and it just hasn't clicked with me. I'm not even against moviegames, I don't mind them at all but holy fuck RDR2 is like a moviegame on steroids. The entire thing is built to be "cinematic."

The main issue though is how slow the game is. Low response times when you put any input on the controller, and how slow the character is to move around and do things. God it's so frustrating how fucking sluggish it feels, it's not good game design at all. RDR1 for all its flaws at least feels responsive and fast and like a video game even if the gameplay is far more simplistic and "unrealistic."

I mean I'll keep pushing on and playing it, but I don't particularly like the characters either. The game tries way too hard to make a bunch of literal murderers anti-heroes and it's pretty insufferable. Every single person in the gang deserves death.

i have like 300 hours and havent even made it past act 2 and honestly have no intention of finishing the main story ever. i played the game as a hunting/poker simulator, then mass murder civilians in between those activities.

The whole game is like this. They design scenes without thinking of how players would want to play and the only freedom you get is when you accidentally break it. Otherwise you're expected to soiface at every scripted scene and never engage with them in a meaningful way. There's cool details but it's all surface level.

If you hate rummaging through containers to loot and doing things like that just don't, you will never need to. The game is built a certain way and everything in the game is designed around it. I'm not saying I wouldn't have preferred the movement to be snappier but it's over exaggerated, you will actually get used to it in an hour of playtime.

It's pretty fucking janky but I really like it, hunting is pretty fun, the combat is very satisfying and there's a lot of things to do.

My argument is that the movement is slow and deliberate and that there is nothing inherently bad about that it's just different. Me saying that you don't need to loot if you don't want to doesn't undermine anything.
