Hajime no Ippo and Ashita no Joe turned me into a huge boxing fan. I think there needs to be a vague curiosity interest there, like a seed waiting to bloom, then you get the right water/sunshine and your passion grows for it. Go to any boxing gym and most young people are all tuned into ippo and will tell you that's why they started boxing. Seems silly but that doesn't change shows and the like can change people's lives, and we're seeing that happen in a pretty big way with Uma right now. If you like the idea of "rivals", I'd recommend both those shows to anyone even if you don't care much about fighting/sports shows. Ashita no Joe is worth watching for the historical importance as well, because it paved the way for a lot of modern anime essentially. Before it was seen as something only to be enjoyed by children, but a lot of adult fans got invested in the show and when one of the characters died, japan had a real life funeral for him, completely shocking the mangaka and making him realize his silly doodles had more impact than he had ever expected.

Support cards are far more important than umas, which can be bred to have different profencies or skills with patience and yes, raised up to a 5 star horse eventually with enough attention.

That being said, 3 star horses are very good, but the banners for Kitasan which is arguably one of the most important cards in the game, and Super Creek which is gonna be the second best we get all year, yeah people are dumping everything to make sure they can get as much of those two cards as possible. After that, I imagine more people will roll on trainees. But support cards will make or break your run and can be useful on all sorts of umas. More stronger trainees will be added in the future too. It depends on what your priorities are. You might need a good dirt uma because you dont have Taiki Shuttle or Oguri, so you run for Smart Falcon, that kind of thing.

I think both were "organic", but one is a cartoon show marketed for literal children. Meanwhile Umas got a lot more depth going to it, all the thought into the characters with every detail being based on the real horse's story, the game being surprisingly complex and addictive (MLP games aren't gonna be doing that), and the characters not really being furries but just kind cute anime girls so it's not gonna push away too many people or be associated with anything overtly weird like cartoon ponies for children. It wouldn't work as well if they didn't have a ton of attention to detail. It's not just their personalities, but the literal designs themselves having tons of references. It's a labor of love, it shows their passion.
I genuinely believe you could do this for all sorts of material, but this particular blend of styles and elements of different things just works out well and plays to its strengths. A ton of thought went into each character, each story, the mechanics behind racing, all of that stuff.

It's like if you're a writer, you're going to tell a better story if it's based on something you're familiar with, that reflects your life. The people behind the game clearly have a ton of passion for horse racing and it bleeds through in such a way that it can help other people see the appeal when they wouldn't normally have. A well designed story can do that, but to be good it has to be derived from some sort of lived experience of the writer. Obviously that doesn't account for things like science fiction, but even science fiction has its own inspirations and things that are based on the lived experiences of the people who created them.

The key difference between 1-2 Stars umas and 3 stars umas is that you can't pass down their Unique Skills (+ you don't have their signature outfit but that's cosmetic), when you upgrade a 1-2 Stars umas to 3 Stars their Unique Skill even changes name and gets a new animation too.

In general what makes an Uma are 3 things:
1- Stat growth rate (like some Umas will have +20% Speed which means they get more Speed from training).

2- Different Aptitudes (they can be more or less flexible to participate in different track lenghts or terrain, although you still can use Aptitude sparks to ugprade a Rank C or B to Rank A, in the case of Ranks D or lower it starts to become not worth it).

3- Unique Skills (the most obvious).

4- Potential Skills (the skills that unlock with "level up", they're actually more important than it seems at a glance, always having specific skills unlocked EVERY run opens you options to try different Support Cards and whatnot, a way to look is that your own Uma is a support card by itself, you just have to unlock the skills with Leveling up).

I've honestly never seen a piece of fictional media be this thoughtful when it comes to recreating stories from real life. They have to be creative to be able to turn the horse into an anime girl. Sometimes the execution isn't always perfect but it works out surprisingly well because the horses themselves had such interesting stories. They have rivals. They have fans cheering them on. Everything is just like in the game, almost 1:1 in some cases. The older I get, the more I realize strong fiction is heavily, heavily based on reality. Once again that doesnt mean I'm saying it HAS to be a 1:1 representation, fantasies and science fiction don't hold to that, but they have inspirations that go back hundreds of years from old stories like Beowulf, King Arthur and all that kinda stuff. The manga is dragging its feet, but I wouldn't say it's not worth reading/watching.

The original run of the show and the seasons that followed are pretty damn good honestly, but they only cover about 1/3 of the story that's in the manga. What I did was watch the show, then read the manga (but started from the beginning) to continue the story.

They leaned into it a little bit by showing Coach's story from the WW2 era, but that's about it.

It is similar in the sense that you have your main character, and your supporting cast, but sometimes the supporting cast gets stories that are way way more interesting than whatever the main character is going through, and they all tend to happen in tandem. Like uma, each character has fights (races) lined up, sometimes on the same venue, and they've all got their own rivals they're up against as well, sometimes friendly, sometimes not so friendly. Uma leans way more into friendly rivalries so it would be nice to see some more antagonistic ones. I haven't looked too far into the future of the JP release as I don't want to spoil myself completely but it does seem like there will be some "mean" rivals coming soon.

All of the fighters are based on real boxers. It's not as blatant as uma, but there are some where it's straight up namedropped in the show, and it teaches you a lot about all of the different styles and what have you. It works as a great introduction, even if it's not exactly "realistic" in how the fights play out.

When you watch real boxing you understand Ippo would have died of CTE a long time ago.
Two japanese boxers just recently died on the same card. Japanese hold the third largest amount of champs in the world right now. They fight like Mexicans on crack. They're really passionate about boxing over there and are willing to die in the ring, unlike any other kind of fighters.
