pvp players historically referred to each patch as a season, since there was no simple way to differentiate rank status from one patch to the next.
IE: I was a gladiator in the third patch of the fourth expansion was a wordy way to say it. the pvp "season" didn't have a unique name like a raid, so they just numbered it

Why not? Players are resubbing for big patches with a lot of new changes and new content. Many non-MMO players are familiar with that term as well.
