Ninja Gaiden is the original punishingly unforgivingly hard videogame. Why didn't it catch on the same way Dark Souls did? Why aren't there 6 gorillion gaidenlikes on the market like there are with soulslikes? So far I can't think of a reason.

Because it came out during a time where challenging games weren't uncommon. Dark Souls came out during a time where most games were dogshit easy and even Ninja Gaiden tried to be more cinematic.

Because itagaki left and the series died. Before then it sold millions, was a flagship exclusive, and was big enough to have Halo crossovers.

It's probably harder to make a Ninja Gaiden game where your character has 10+ weapons each with a fighting game's worth of moves than R1 and press the dodge button at the right time combat.

Ninja Gaiden didn't sell "Millions". It wasn't even Team Ninja's best selling IP, that was Dead or Alive

Because a lot of people like the RPG elements of souls games and making builds. Even within Fromsoft fans, there's some that hate Sekiro because it doesn't let them make builds.

Because Souls has ways for you to make things easier. Not good at dodging? Magic. Can't keep up with the boss? Summons or later Spirit ashes. Dying too fast? Just level up more.

If you're stuck in Ninja Gaiden there is NOTHING you can do but get better or play on easy, which the game mocks you for. Even spamming healing will only get you so far.

Souls isn't popular because of difficulty, it's popular because of "customizable" difficulty. You're given so many options and tools to deal with situations that its actually very rare to run into a wall you can't overcome. The wall is most likely a self-imposed challenge hence all the "you didn't beat the game" memes.

because it was only on Xbox just like Demon's Souls was only on PS3. And Dark Souls didn't even catch up till many many years later because of streamers. Even when Bloodborne was released it was still pretty niche, it was with Dark Souls 3 and PewDiePie that the franchise exploded.

>6 gorillion gaidenlikes
Because they are way harder to make. Even NG4 has worse animations than those TN games. From software themselves tried and failed
>catch on the same way Dark Souls did
Souls caught on slowly. Look at Demons souls sales numbers (about 1.7 million copies), the series wasn't an overnight massive hit. It just did its own semi original thing on a decently big budget without compromising (much). All versions of NG 2004 and its re-releases combined sold in way higher numbers (around 3 millions)

As a teen I thought it was the hardest shit ever but replaying it a few years ago, its rather easy by just spamming this

You can't do this though. Enemies can counter your flying swallow.

>Not good at dodgin? Magic.
You can do this in NG
>Can't keep up with the boss?
Use items smartly and study the boss. It's okay to not get it down on the first try. NG bosses go down extremely quick once you get good hits in.
>Dying too fast
Abuse Iframes with UTs, OTs, wall attacks, other Iframe moves etc.

I can say by experience that OG 2 in normal difficulty is way harder than Sigma 2 in hard, I vividly remember how Elisebeth's second fight would melt around 80% of my HP with one of her special attacks in the original game, but in Sigma 2 she barely does any meaningful damage and during my entire playthrough I only died one time.

Those are things the game wants you to do though. My point was more if something is too hard in Souls, there's usually something you can do immediately cut the difficulty with a click of the button or with the RPG elements.

I dunno, my experience is different. I'm playing OG2 right now on normal and I think it's easier than NGB on normal. I've barely died and I've gotten Master Ninja rank on pretty much every chapter without even trying. I'm gonna play it on Mentor immediately after I finish normal though.
